Lesson 238 of 240

New here? This is lesson 238 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

Renew the lease in Japanese

Leo brings his renewal papers to Ono-san's gate. This time, he already knows the room, the staircase, and the person holding the keys.

He wants to stay, but first he checks the rent and the terms. Ono-san keeps the conversation brief.

You will request another year, consider a longer term, and politely acknowledge that the relationship will continue.

By the end of this lesson

Agree to renew your lease, check what changes, and say you have decided to stay.

I'd like to renew for another year.
Will the rent change?
Are the terms the same as before?
I've decided to stay.
Two years would be fine too.
I'll be in your care from here as well.

Scene — at Ono-san's gate

At her gate in Yanaka, Taito, Tokyo, Ono-san holds a ring of keys and the renewal papers. Leo stands outside with his own key in his pocket.

At Kissa Hotaru, the old black umbrella remains in its stand with the faded tag attached. Goro has not touched it.

Ono-san and Leo meet at the gate with the renewal papers and keys.

Learn — another year in Yanaka

These six lines move a renewal conversation from your initial request to a clear decision.

Check the details, then close politely with someone you already know.

  1. Leo politely asks to renew while Ono-san holds the paperwork across the gate.

I'd like to renew for another year.

When to use it: Use this when asking your current landlord to extend your existing lease by another year.

The wish ending makes this a polite request rather than an announcement.

  2. Leo indicates the rent section of the renewal papers as he asks whether it will change.

    Will the rent change?

When to use it: Ask this before agreeing to renew when you need to check whether the rent will change.

This asks whether the amount changes, without assuming an increase.

  3. Leo checks the previous agreement against the renewal papers to see whether the terms match.

Are the terms the same as before?

When to use it: Use this to compare the renewal terms with your previous agreement.

The particle と marks the earlier agreement as the comparison point for 'the same.'

  4. Leo confirms his decision to stay as Ono-san listens from inside the gate.

    I've decided to stay.

When to use it: Say this when you have made your decision to remain and want to tell the landlord.

A plain verb followed by ことにしました reports a decision you have already made.

  5. Leo gestures that choosing the longer renewal would also suit him.

Two years would be fine too.

When to use it: Use this when a two-year term is offered as an alternative you can also accept.

Here, でも accepts two years as another workable option.

  6. Leo bows respectfully to Ono-san as he acknowledges their continuing relationship.

I'll be in your care from here as well.

When to use it: Say this to close politely when your existing relationship with a landlord will continue.

This set phrase acknowledges the other person's continuing help.

Story — one nod, then the paperwork

Ono-san asks about the renewal while holding her keys. Leo gives her a clear answer.

The conversation stays practical as they check the agreement and complete the paperwork.

Leo, what would you like to do about renewing?
I've decided to stay.
  3. Ono-san nods once, as if that was always the plan. She shifts the keys and opens the folder.
I'd like to renew for another year.
You can choose one year or two years.

Yes, they're the same as before.
Two years would be fine too.
Then please check the details.

Here it is. This is the two-year agreement.
What documents do I need?
Just this document. Please sign here.
  16. Leo checks the dates and signs. Ono-san keeps one hand around her ring of keys.
I'll be in your care from here as well.
Likewise, I look forward to continuing.
