When to use: Use this to say what you want to buy or find. Put the item you want in the blank; since it's the object, use を.

Tip: Beginners sometimes say 「___は探しています」 using は instead of を; use を for the object.

すみません、ワンピースを探しています。

Sumimasen, wanpīsu o sagashite imasu.

Excuse me, I'm looking for a dress.
靴を探しています。サイズは24センチです。

Kutsu o sagashite imasu. Saizu wa nijūyon senchi desu.

Meaning: Where can I find ___?

When to use: Put a product name or department in the blank. Use は to ask about location naturally.

文房具はどこにありますか。

Bunbōgu wa doko ni arimasu ka.

デザートはどこにありますか。ケーキはありますか?

Dizāto wa doko ni arimasu ka. Kēki wa arimasu ka?

Where are the desserts? Do you have cakes?

Kore wa ikura desu ka.

Meaning: How much is this?

When to use: Use this while pointing at an item to ask for the price. It's a basic and polite phrase.

すみません、これはいくらですか。

Sumimasen, kore wa ikura desu ka.

Excuse me, how much is this?
そのバッグは高そうです。これはいくらですか。

Sono baggu wa takasō desu. Kore wa ikura desu ka.

That bag looks expensive. How much is this?

When to use: Put a size, color, or type in the blank (e.g., Mサイズ, 赤). Use this to check availability of another version of an item.

When to use: Use this for clothes and shoes. If you're testing a non-clothing item, say これを試してもいいですか。

靴を試着してもいいですか。サイズが合うか確認したいです。

Kutsu o shichaku shite mo ii desu ka. Saizu ga au ka kakunin shitai desu.

Meaning: Do you take cards?

When to use: Use this to ask if you can pay with a credit or debit card. 「クレジットカードは使えますか」 is also natural.

Tip: Some learners try to say 「カードで使えますか」 — the natural form is 「カードは使えますか。」

カードは使えますか。現金しか持っていません。

Kādo wa tsukaemasu ka. Genkin shika motte imasen.

Do you take cards? I only have cash.

Meaning: Can I pay in ___?

When to use: Put the payment method in the blank (e.g., カード, 現金). Use で because you're saying the means of payment.

Tip: Don't use に here (e.g., *カードに払えますか). Use で for the method: カードで払えますか。

カードで払えますか。

Kādo de haraemasu ka.

Can I pay by card?
現金で払えますか。カードが使えないと言われました。

Genkin de haraemasu ka. Kādo ga tsukaenai to iwaremashita.

Can I pay in cash? I was told cards don't work.

もっと安いものはありますか。

Motto yasui mono wa arimasu ka.

Meaning: Is there a cheaper one?

When to use: Use this to ask for a lower-cost option of the same kind. 「もう少し安いものはありますか」 is a softer phrasing.

このジャケットは高いです。もっと安いものはありますか。

Kono jaketto wa takai desu. Motto yasui mono wa arimasu ka.

This jacket is expensive. Is there a cheaper one?
予算が限られています。もう少し安いものはありますか。

Yosan ga kagirarete imasu. Mō sukoshi yasui mono wa arimasu ka.

When to use: Say this when you decide to buy the item. Pointing at the product while saying it sounds natural.

これにします。色もサイズもいいです。

Kore ni shimasu. Iro mo saizu mo ii desu.

I'll take this. Color and size are good.
ありがとうございます。これにします。袋はいりますか?

Arigatō gozaimasu. Kore ni shimasu. Fukuro wa irimasu ka?

Meaning: Can I get a receipt, please?

When to use: Use this to ask for a purchase receipt. For an official company receipt use 「領収書をもらえますか」。
