Level A1: In this lesson you'll practice polite, everyday phrases for asking prices (___はいくらですか。 / いくらですか?), checking unit price (1つあたり___です。), asking the total (全部でいくらですか。), asking quantities (いくつですか。), and making simple requests (___、お願いします。 / ___だけ、お願いします。). After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Ask the price of an item: '___はいくらですか。' (___ wa ikura desu ka).
  • Say a price: '___です。' (___ desu).
  • Ask the total and unit price: '全部でいくらですか。' (Zenbu de ikura desu ka) and '1つあたり___です。' (Hitotsu atari ___ desu).
  • Request quantities politely: '___、お願いします。' (___, onegai shimasu) and '___だけ、お願いします。' (___ dake, onegai shimasu).
  • Use simple responses about payment and affordability (現金ですか、カードですか。 / お金が足りません。).

When to use: Use this to ask the price of a specific item. Put the item before 「はいくらですか。」 (add は after the item).

Tip: Don't forget the particle は after the item; 'りんごいくらですか' sounds unnatural.

When to use: Ask this at the register when you want the total amount to pay.

When to use: Ask this to learn the number of items. For small objects, 何個ですか can also be natural.

Tip: Learners sometimes use 何 instead of いくつ; for people count 何人 (なんにん) is needed.

When to use: Put a quantity or item before this phrase to politely request it (e.g., 二つ、お願いします。 or このケーキをお願いします。).

Tip: Don't place the verb before the item; put the item/number first, then 'お願いします'.

When to use: Use this to ask for only a limited amount or only that item (put quantity or item before だけ).

Only size S, please.

それは高すぎます。

Sore wa takasugimasu.

That's too expensive.

Meaning: That's too expensive.

When to use: Use when you think the price is too high. A softer phrasing is ちょっと高いです。

この時計は高すぎます。

Kono tokei wa takasugimasu.

This watch is too expensive.
それは高すぎます、もう少し安いのはありますか?

Sore wa takasugimasu, mō sukoshi yasui no wa arimasu ka?

That's too expensive — do you have a slightly cheaper one?

Meaning: Do you have a cheaper one?

When to use: Ask this to request a lower-priced option. The の stands for 'one/item'.

このカバン、もっと安いのはありますか?

同じサイズで、もっと安いのはありますか?

Meaning: I don't have enough money.

When to use: Say this if you realize you can't pay the full amount. が marks what is lacking.

ごめんなさい、お金が足りません。

Gomen nasai, okane ga tarimasen.

Sorry, I don't have enough money.
今日はお金が足りません、カードで払えますか?
