Bigger numbers in Japanese
Leo is at the counter of Kissa Hotaru with Masako. The bill sits on the tray, and Goro's Suica card dangles over it, still unused.
You will say eleven, twenty-five, one hundred yen, and one thousand yen. Then you will ask how much it is altogether, and hear eight hundred fifty yen.
The polite style stays. Card payment waits. Ten thousand does too.

Scene — the bill on the tray
Masako sets a small bill on the wooden tray at the counter. Leo leans in. Goro's Suica hangs on its cord over the tray, but nobody taps it.
The old black umbrella stays in the stand by the door. Goro has not finished his blend coffee.
Learn — eleven to a thousand
Six short lines cover eleven, twenty-five, one hundred yen, and one thousand yen.
You'll also ask how much it is altogether, then hear the total on the bill.
十一です。
It's eleven.
When to use it: Say this when the number is eleven.
Learn it as one piece for eleven.
Say it: じゅう has a long u, not a short じゅ.
二十五です。
It's twenty-five.
When to use it: Say this when the number is twenty-five.
Learn it as one piece for twenty-five.
百円です。
It's 100 yen.
When to use it: Say this for a hundred yen on a price.
Learn it as one piece for one hundred yen.
千円です。
It's 1,000 yen.
When to use it: Say this for one thousand yen, not ten thousand.
Learn it as one piece for one thousand yen.
全部でいくらですか。
How much is that altogether?
When to use it: Ask this when you want the total, not one item.
Learn it as one piece to ask the total.
全部で850円です。
That's 850 yen in all.
When to use it: Say this to give the total on a bill.
Learn it as one piece for the total in yen.
Say it: 850円 starts はっぴゃく: hold the small っ.
Story — eight hundred fifty
Watch Leo check the bill at Kissa Hotaru. He asks the total just to hear the number again.
