Lesson 156 of 240

New here? This is lesson 156 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

Come in, go up in Japanese

Leo stands at the metal staircase with two shopping bags. Ono-san waits at the bottom with her keys and a short nod.

She asks him to come in and go up. He takes the bags, then ducks into Kissa Hotaru.

Goro says he is heading out, then stays in the booth with his unfinished coffee.

You will ask people to come in or go up, and say when someone came in, left, or will be back.

By the end of this lesson

Say someone came in, went out, or went up, and ask them to do so.

Please come in.
I'm heading out now.
Please come up to the second floor.
I'll be right back.
Someone just came in.
I'll take the bags up.

Scene — the metal stairs

The outside metal staircase of Leo's building is in afternoon shade. Ono-san stands on the first landing with her keys. Two shopping bags pull at Leo's hands.

A cat watches from a step. Later the same bags sit by a kissa booth, where Goro has not touched his blend coffee.

Ono-san waits on the outside staircase landing while Leo stands below with two shopping bags.

Learn — come in and go up

These six lines cover coming in, heading out, going up, and coming back.

You also report that someone just arrived, and offer to carry bags upstairs.

  1. Ono-san holds the landing door open and welcomes Leo inside.

    Please come in.

When to use it: Ask someone at the door to come in toward you.

  4. Leo looks back over his shoulder from the stairs while holding the shopping bags.

    I'll be right back.

When to use it: Leave for a moment and promise a quick return.

戻ってきます means you will come back toward here.
