Lesson 161 of 240

New here? This is lesson 161 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

Project updates in Japanese

Mori-san wants a short status on the puzzle game, not a story about toast.

Leo sits down in the Ueno office and tries to say what is done, what is still moving, and what is stuck.

You will give a progress update: finished, in progress, or blocked. Then you add a deadline, a rough percent, and a promise to report again.

Keep it polite. Mori-san likes plans in plain words.

By the end of this lesson

Give a short progress update: done, in progress, or blocked.

  • 翻訳(ほんやく)はもうできています。The translation is already done.
  • 今(いま)はテストの途中(とちゅう)です。Testing is in progress.
  • 確認(かくにん)待(ま)ちで止(と)まっています。We're stuck waiting for a check.
  • 金曜日(きんようび)までに出(だ)せます。We can hand it over by Friday.
  • 進捗(しんちょく)は八(はち)割(わり)ぐらいです。We're at about eighty percent.
  • 明日(あした)、また報告(ほうこく)します。I'll report again tomorrow.

Scene — at the whiteboard

The Ueno office is quiet after lunch. Mori-san stands by a blank whiteboard, tablet in one hand, and looks at Leo's desk.

She wants done, in progress, or stuck. She does not want to hear how Goro ordered toast.

Mori-san stands by the blank whiteboard and looks toward Leo at his desk.

Learn — a short status

These six lines are a short status: done, in progress, or stuck.

You also get a Friday deadline, a rough percent, and a promise to report tomorrow.

  1. Leo rests both hands on a closed folder containing finished work.

    翻訳(ほんやく)はもうできています。

    The translation is already done.

When to use it: Use this when that part of the work is finished.

できています marks a finished state, not the moment you finish.

  2. Leo leans toward his computer and works through a test.

    今(いま)はテストの途中(とちゅう)です。

    Testing is in progress.

When to use it: Use this when that work has started but is not finished.

途中 means you are in the middle of the task.

  3. Leo pauses with folded arms while waiting for a check.

    確認(かくにん)待(ま)ちで止(と)まっています。

We're stuck waiting for a check.

When to use it: Use this when work cannot move until someone checks it.

で here gives the reason the work is stuck.

Say it: Hold the small っ in 止まっています.

  4. Leo gestures toward the folder as Mori-san listens to his handover plan.

    金曜日(きんようび)までに出(だ)せます。

We can hand it over by Friday.

When to use it: Use this to give a deadline you can still meet.

までに marks the latest time you can hand it over.

  5. Leo points to a mostly filled progress bar on his monitor.

    進捗(しんちょく)は八(はち)割(わり)ぐらいです。

    We're at about eighty percent.

When to use it: Use this to give a rough share of the work that is done.

割 is a tenth, so 八割 means about eighty percent.

  6. Over Mori-san's shoulder, Leo turns toward her after promising another update tomorrow.

    明日(あした)、また報告(ほうこく)します。

    I'll report again tomorrow.

When to use it: Use this to promise a short update the next day.

また here means you will give another report, not a new topic.
