Welcome to Lesson 55 — short and useful phrases you can use at the office. Say the phrases aloud, listen in the mini-dialogue, then practice with quick quizzes to lock them in.

Level A2: In this lesson you'll practice common workplace phrases for giving meeting times, asking permission to leave early, explaining absence, asking about responsibilities, and confirming sent items. This CEFR-aligned lesson (Lesson 55) focuses on nine ready-to-use frames you can use today at work or when messaging your team.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Use polite phrases to tell or ask about times (e.g. 会議は___からです。 Kaigi wa ___ kara desu.).
  • Ask for permission and explain absence: 今日は早退してもいいですか。(Kyō wa sōtai shite mo ii desu ka.) and 今日は仕事に行けません。(Kyō wa shigoto ni ikemasen.).
  • Describe responsibilities and confirm sent items (___を担当しています。 / ___を送りました。).
  • Level A2: practice listening, repeating, and short speaking prompts for workplace tasks.

1. Reading + Listening Practice

When to use: Use this to tell colleagues the start time of a meeting; put a time in the blank (e.g., 3時).

Tip: Don't use まで (made) here — から (kara) indicates the starting time, not the end time.

会議は3時からです。

Kaigi wa san-ji kara desu.

The meeting starts at 3:00.
明日の会議は9時からです。

Ashita no kaigi wa ku-ji kara desu.

Tomorrow's meeting starts at 9:00.

今日は早退してもいいですか。

Meaning: Can I leave early today?

When to use: Ask a manager or coworker for permission to leave work earlier than usual.

Gogo wa sōtai shite mo ii desu ka.

今日は仕事に行けません。

Kyō wa shigoto ni ikemasen.

Meaning: I can't come to work today.

When to use: Tell your supervisor or team when you cannot attend work that day (polite).

Tip: Beginners sometimes say 出勤できません (shukkin dekimasen) — it's fine and slightly more formal; both are used.

今日は仕事に行けません。申し訳ありません。

Kyō wa shigoto ni ikemasen. Mōshiwake arimasen.

I can't come to work today. I'm sorry.
体調が悪いので、今日は仕事に行けません。

Taichō ga warui node, kyō wa shigoto ni ikemasen.

I'm not feeling well, so I can't come to work today.

Mō sukoshi jikan ga hitsuyō desu.

I need more time.

Meaning: I need more time.

When to use: Use this when you need extra time to finish a task or prepare before a meeting.

もう少し時間が必要です。資料を整えます。

Mō sukoshi jikan ga hitsuyō desu. Shiryō o totonoemasu.

I need a little more time. I'll prepare the materials.
その報告にはもう少し時間が必要です。

Sono hōkoku ni wa mō sukoshi jikan ga hitsuyō desu.

That report needs a bit more time.

When to use: Use this to confirm you have sent an email, file, message, etc.; put the item in the blank (e.g., メールを).

Tip: Watch the particle: use を after the object you sent (e.g., メールを), not に.

メールを送りました。ご確認ください。

Mēru o okurimashita. Go-kakunin kudasai.

I sent the email. Please check it.
ファイルを送りました。届きましたか?

When to use: Ask which colleague is in charge of a task, project, or document (put the item in the blank).

Kono purojekuto wa dare no tantō desu ka.

When to use: Use this to tell colleagues you have a job interview scheduled on a specific day or time (put date/time in blank).

San-ji ni shigoto no mensetsu ga arimasu.

I have a job interview at 3:00.
来週の金曜日に仕事の面接があります。

Raishū no kin'yōbi ni shigoto no mensetsu ga arimasu.

I have a job interview next Friday.

今日は残業します。

Kyō wa zangyō shimasu.

I'm working late today.

Meaning: I'm working late today.

When to use: Tell coworkers you will be staying beyond normal hours (temporary change).

今日は残業します。遅くなります。

Kyō wa zangyō shimasu. Osoku narimasu.

I'm working overtime today. I'll be late.
今週は忙しいので、今日は残業します。

Konshū wa isogashii node, kyō wa zangyō shimasu.

This week is busy, so I'm working late today.

When to use: Use this to state your role or the tasks you handle; put the role or area in the blank (e.g., マーケティングを).
