Lesson 90 of 240

New here? This is lesson 90 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

Try it on in Japanese

Haruka walks Leo down a side lane off Yanaka Ginza and into a small clothing shop. A navy jacket on the rack catches his eye.

Goro follows them in, but the fitting room is made for one person, not a yak.

You will ask to try something on, find the fitting room, and ask for other sizes and colors.

Then you either take a moment to think, or you choose.

By the end of this lesson

Ask to try something on, then choose.

Can I try this on?
Where is the fitting room?
Do you have a bigger size?
Do you have another color?
I'll think about it.
I'll take this one.

Scene — a shop off the lane

A narrow shop off Yanaka Ginza hangs jackets on a wooden rack. Haruka holds the door. Leo eyes a navy jacket.

Goro fills the aisle in his olive coat. The fitting room curtain at the back is blank and small.

A clerk waits by the till, ready to help.

Haruka holds the shop door while Leo studies a navy jacket and Goro occupies the narrow aisle.

Learn — try this on

These six lines take you through a shop: ask to try something on, find the fitting room, then ask for size or color.

You also get two ways to finish: think a moment, or take it.

  1. Leo lifts a navy jacket from the rack and holds it toward the shop counter as Haruka watches.

    Can I try this on?

When to use it: Ask a clerk before you step into the fitting room with an item.

てもいいですか asks permission after a て-form verb.

  2. Leo points toward the small fitting-room curtain at the back of the shop.

    Where is the fitting room?

When to use it: Ask this when you need the fitting room in a shop.

は marks 試着室 as the thing you are asking about.

  3. Goro gestures toward the small fitting-room curtain while Leo waits beside its entrance.

Do you have a bigger size?

When to use it: Use this when the size you tried feels too small.

もっと before 大きい asks for a size bigger than this one.

  4. Leo holds a brown jacket in front of himself while Haruka offers the navy jacket beside the rack.

    Do you have another color?

When to use it: Use this when you like the item but want a different color.

の links 別 to 色 when you ask for another color.

  5. Leo pauses to consider the brown jacket before deciding whether to buy it.

    I'll think about it.

When to use it: Use this when you need a moment before you decide.

This polite line buys a moment when you are not ready to buy.

  6. Leo extends the brown jacket toward the counter as Haruka waits beside the rack.

    I'll take this one.

When to use it: Use this when you have chosen the item you will buy.

にします means you choose this one and will take it.
