Lesson 114 of 240

New here? This is lesson 114 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

The doctor's questions in Japanese

Leo sits in Dr. Ishida's small clinic across the lane from Kissa Hotaru. His stomach still hurts, and the konbini medicine did nothing.

Ishida asks what Leo already took, then checks for allergies. Leo rates the pain as a five and wants a clear next step.

You will ask about tests, name an egg allergy, and find out what to avoid and when to come back.

Keep it polite. This is a real visit, not a chat with friends.

By the end of this lesson

Answer the doctor about tests, allergies, and what to do next.

Do I need any tests?
I took medicine, but it didn't help.
I'm allergic to eggs.
What should I avoid?
It hurts all the time.
When should I come back?

Scene — at the clinic

The clinic sits beside the pharmacy on Leo's lane. Pale walls, a high examination couch, and a window onto the wet street.

Dr. Ishida waits with a stethoscope and a short list of questions. Leo still has the empty medicine bag in his jacket.

Leo hangs his empty medicine bag on a chair as Dr. Ishida joins him in the clinic room.

Learn — tests and allergies

These six lines help you talk through a clinic visit: tests, medicine that failed, an allergy, and the next visit.

Each one is polite. You ask, then you answer.

  1. Leo gestures toward the test tools while Dr. Ishida listens.

    Do I need any tests?

When to use it: Ask this when you want to know if the doctor needs tests.

は marks 検査 as the topic of this yes-no question.

Say it: Give ん in 検査 its own beat.

  2. Leo holds out his empty medicine bag to show that he took medicine without relief.

I took medicine, but it didn't help.

When to use it: Tell the doctor you already tried medicine and it failed.

が after ました means but, then you give the result.

  3. Leo raises an open palm as he explains his egg allergy to Dr. Ishida.

    I'm allergic to eggs.

When to use it: Use this to name an egg allergy at the clinic.

の links 卵 to アレルギー, like egg plus allergy.

  4. Dr. Ishida writes a short note after advising Leo what to avoid.

    What should I avoid?

When to use it: Ask this when you want the doctor's list of things to skip.

たほうがいい means it is better to do it. Here it asks what is better to avoid.

  5. Leo indicates that the pain is constant while Dr. Ishida listens beside the couch.

    It hurts all the time.

When to use it: Use this when the pain does not stop.

ずっと means the pain stays; it does not come and go.

Say it: Hold the small っ in ずっと; do not skip it.

  6. At the doorway, Leo turns back toward Dr. Ishida to ask when he should return.

    When should I come back?

When to use it: Ask this before you leave, to set the next visit.

来ればいい asks the right time for you to come back.
