Ready to make plans in Japanese? This short lesson helps you invite friends, check availability, and set a meeting—politely and naturally. Have fun practicing aloud!

Level A2: Lesson 128 focuses on practical phrases for making plans (asking if someone is free, inviting, suggesting times/places, and confirming). This CEFR-aligned set helps you schedule meetings, offer alternatives, and politely accept or decline. You'll listen, repeat, and use the phrases in short quizzes and speaking practice.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Level A2: Practice polite planning phrases to ask about availability (e.g., 「___は空いていますか?」).
  • Invite someone and suggest options using frames like 「一緒に___ませんか?」 and 「___はどうですか?」.
  • Confirm meeting details and respond to alternatives (e.g., 「待ち合わせは___にしましょう。」 and 「___なら大丈夫です。」).

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

___は空いていますか?

___ wa aite imasu ka?

Are you free ___?

Meaning: Are you free ___?

When to use: Put a time or date before the blank plus は to ask if someone is available (polite).

Tip: Don’t put the time after the verb; the time should come before は (e.g., 「土曜日は…」).

土曜日は空いていますか?

Doyōbi wa aite imasu ka?

Are you free on Saturday?
来週の金曜日は空いていますか?

Raishū no kin'yōbi wa aite imasu ka?

Are you free next Friday?

一緒に___ませんか?

Issho ni ___masen ka?

Do you want to ___?

Meaning: Do you want to ___ together?

When to use: Use a verb stem before the blank (polite invitation). For activity nouns, add し as needed.

Tip: Beginners sometimes use the plain verb instead of the stem+ませんか (casual) — stick with the polite stem form here.

Issho ni eiga o mimasen ka?

Would you like to watch a movie together?
一緒にランチしませんか?

Issho ni ranchi shimasen ka?

Shall we have lunch together?

Meaning: Let’s meet at ___.

When to use: Use for suggesting a meeting time or place; place/time goes in the blank. For place-only, 「で会いましょう」 is also natural.

Tip: Confusing に and で: use に for a time or specific spot (e.g., ‘6時に’), and で if you only want to say 'at the café' informally with 会う.
