Meaning: Can I turn it in tomorrow?

When to use: Use this to politely ask a teacher if it's okay to submit homework or assignments a day late. You can omit the item if the context (homework, report) is clear; to be explicit say 「宿題を明日出してもいいですか。」

Tip: Beginners sometimes forget to add the particle を when the object is explicit (e.g., 宿題を明日出してもいいですか。).

先生、宿題を明日出してもいいですか。

Sensei, shukudai o ashita dashite mo ii desu ka.

Teacher, can I turn in the homework tomorrow?
プロジェクトを明日出してもいいですか。

Purojekuto o ashita dashite mo ii desu ka.

Meaning: I got ___ on the test.

When to use: Use this frame to report a score or grade. Put a number or a grade in the blank, for example 「90点を取りました」 or 「Aを取りました」。

Tip: Some learners forget the object particle を after the score or grade (say 90点を取りました, not 90点取りました).

テストで90点を取りました。

Tesuto de kyūjū ten o torimashita.

Tesuto de Ē o torimashita.

I got an A on the test.

テストはどうでしたか。

Tesuto wa dō deshita ka.

Meaning: How did you do on the test?

When to use: Ask this to check how someone performed on a test. For casual speech with friends you can shorten it to 「テストどうだった?」

テストはどうでしたか。何点でしたか。

Tesuto wa dō deshita ka. Nan ten deshita ka.

How was the test? How many points did you get?
先生:テストはどうでしたか。学生:難しかったです。

Sensei: Tesuto wa dō deshita ka. Gakusei: Muzukashikatta desu.

Teacher: How was the test? Student: It was difficult.

___ ni tsuite benkyō shite imasu.

We're learning about ___.

Meaning: We're learning about ___.

When to use: Use this to say the topic your class is studying. Put the topic in the blank, for example 「環境問題について勉強しています。」 The subject 私たちは is often omitted in natural speech.

今、歴史について勉強しています。

Ima, rekishi ni tsuite benkyō shite imasu.

We're studying history now.
英語の授業では文化について勉強しています。

Eigo no jugyō de wa bunka ni tsuite benkyō shite imasu.

In English class we're studying about culture.

学校は___に始まります。

Gakkō wa ___ ni hajimarimasu.

School starts at ___.

Meaning: School starts at ___.

When to use: Say this when telling what time school or classes begin. Put the time in the blank, for example 「8時に始まります。」 Use に after the time.

学校は8時に始まります。

Gakkō wa hachi-ji ni hajimarimasu.

School starts at 8 o'clock.
月曜日の授業は9時に始まります。

Getsuyōbi no jugyō wa ku-ji ni hajimarimasu.

Monday classes start at 9.

昨日、授業を休みました。

Kinō, jugyō o yasumimashita.

I missed class yesterday.

Meaning: I missed class yesterday.

When to use: Use this to tell someone you were absent from class yesterday. If you missed the whole school day say 「昨日、学校を休みました。」

昨日、授業を休みました。先生に連絡しました。

Kinō, jugyō o yasumimashita. Sensei ni renraku shimashita.

I missed class yesterday. I contacted the teacher.
風邪で昨日、授業を休みました。

Kaze de kinō, jugyō o yasumimashita.

I missed class yesterday because of a cold.

___を家に忘れました。

___ o ie ni wasuremashita.

I forgot my ___ at home.

Meaning: I forgot my ___ at home.

When to use: Put the forgotten item in the blank (教科書, 筆箱, 宿題 etc.). Use を after the item: 「教科書を家に忘れました。」

Tip: Beginners sometimes drop the particle を after the object (say 教科書を家に忘れました).

教科書を家に忘れました。借りられますか。

Kyōkasho o ie ni wasuremashita. Kariraremasu ka.

I forgot my textbook at home. Can I borrow one?
筆箱を家に忘れました。鉛筆を貸してください。

Fudebako o ie ni wasuremashita. Empitsu o kashite kudasai.

I forgot my pencil case at home. Please lend me a pencil.

___ ni tsuite no purojekuto ga arimasu.

Meaning: We have a project about ___.

When to use: Put the project theme in the blank. This is useful when explaining class assignments: 「環境についてのプロジェクトがあります。」

来週、環境についてのプロジェクトがあります。

Raishū, kankyō ni tsuite no purojekuto ga arimasu.

Next week we have a project about the environment.
グループで歴史についてのプロジェクトがあります。

Gurūpu de rekishi ni tsuite no purojekuto ga arimasu.

When to use: Use this polite request with teachers or classmates to ask them to look over your essay, answers, or homework. Put the work in the blank (作文、答え、宿題など).

Watashi no sakubun o mite moraemasu ka. Tensaku shite kudasai.

Can you check my essay? Please correct it.
私の答えを見てもらえますか。合っているか確認したいです。

Watashi no kotae o mite moraemasu ka. Atte iru ka kakunin shitai desu.

Can you check my answers? I want to confirm they're correct.
