Not what I expected in Japanese
Rain brings Kenta to Kissa Hotaru early, certain the old umbrella's owner will come. Hours pass, but nobody appears.
Leo reflects on a day that did not match what he expected. The phrases here cover pleasant surprises, tougher outcomes, and mild disappointment.
Learn to compare what happened with what you pictured, without blaming anyone or wishing you had chosen differently.
By the end of this lesson
Describe an outcome that differed from what you expected, for better or worse.
It was completely different from what I'd imagined.
It was easier than I expected.
It actually got even harder.
It was a bit of a letdown.
I hadn't pictured it turning out this way.
Well, these things happen.
Scene — a rainy day in Yanaka
Rain streaks the window at Kissa Hotaru, but the lane is quieter than Kenta expected.
He has watched the umbrella stand all morning, sure the old black umbrella's owner would return.
Leo sits across from him while Masako wipes the counter. Goro stays in the corner booth beside his unfinished blend; the black umbrella remains in the stand.
