Hello — ready for a quick, fun practice about surprise? We'll hear useful phrases, practice them with short quizzes, and say them out loud. Keep it light and curious!

Level A2: In this short lesson you'll learn friendly surprise phrases for everyday conversation — how to show amazement, ask for clarification, and react when someone else did something unexpected. This CEFR-aligned lesson focuses on four ready-to-use chunks you can repeat and reuse with friends or coworkers.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Recognize and use polite surprise reactions like すごいですね！(Sugoi desu ne!) and 本当ですか？(Hontō desu ka?).
  • Ask for clarification politely with え、待って、どういうことですか？(E, matte, dō iu koto desu ka?).
  • React specifically about who did something using ___が何をしたんですか？(___ ga nani o shita n desu ka?).
  • Practice listening, choosing correct responses, and speaking the phrases aloud.

Meaning: That's amazing!

When to use: Use this to show positive amazement or admiration. In casual speech you can say just 「すごい！」.

Tip: Don't use it sarcastically unless tone is clear — beginners sometimes sound ironic without intending to.

Meaning: Wait, what?

When to use: Use this to signal sudden surprise and ask for an explanation. Casual: 「え、待って、どういうこと？」.

Tip: Beginners sometimes use only 「え」 which can sound weak; include 「待って」 and the question to sound clear and polite.

え、待って、どういうことですか？今何が起こったんですか？

Meaning: ___ did what?

When to use: Put a person’s name or noun in the blank to emphasize who did the action (use が to mark the actor).

田中さんが何をしたんですか？急に会社を辞めたんですか？

Tanaka-san ga nani o shita n desu ka? Kyū ni kaisha o yameta n desu ka?

What did Mr. Tanaka do? Did he quit the company suddenly?
妹が何をしたんですか？また料理を焦がしたんですか？

Seriously?

Meaning: Seriously?

When to use: Use for mild disbelief or to check if something is true. Casual: 「本当？」 or 「マジ？」.

明日休みなんですか？本当ですか？

Ashita yasumi nan desu ka? Hontō desu ka?

We have tomorrow off? Seriously?
彼が一人で全部したんですか？本当ですか？

Kare ga hitori de zenbu shita n desu ka? Hontō desu ka?
