Lesson 160 of 240

New here? This is lesson 160 of a free 240-lesson Japanese course.

The meeting runs long in Japanese

The test-build talk at the Ueno office has already run long. Mori-san wants a short meeting, and Leo still has bugs on the list.

She cuts in before the next rabbit hole: what is left, what can wait, and when to stop.

You will say you are behind schedule, name how many items remain, and move the room on.

When the clock wins, you park a topic and close for today.

By the end of this lesson

Move a meeting along and say what is left.

We're a bit behind schedule.
There are still three items left.
Let's move on.
We'll come back to this later.
We're about out of time.
Let's leave it here for today.

Scene — the clock in Ueno

Leo sits at a desk in the Ueno office, headset around his neck. A puzzle-game build sits on a screen with no readable UI.

Mori-san stands with a tablet, already tired of the same bug thread.

The wall clock has won. The whiteboard stays blank.

Leo and Mori-san pause their meeting in the Ueno office as the wall clock keeps time above the blank whiteboard.

Learn — move the meeting on

These six lines keep a long meeting moving. You name the delay, count what is left, and close the room for today.

Two of them park a topic so the clock can win without a fight.

  1. Leo pauses over the puzzle-game build, aware that the work is behind schedule.

    We're a bit behind schedule.

When to use it: Use this for a late schedule, not a late arrival.

が marks 進捗 as the thing that is behind.

  2. Mori-san checks the remaining work on a tablet beside a small group of blank sticky notes.

There are still three items left.

When to use it: Use this to count how many items still remain.

まだ means they are still there, not already gone.

Say it: Hold the small っ in 三つ.

  3. Mori-san gestures toward the blank whiteboard and turns the meeting away from the puzzle bug.

    Let's move on.

When to use it: Use this to push the meeting to the next point.

に marks the next point you move toward.

Say it: しょう has a long お sound.

  4. Mori-san sets a blank printout face-down beside the tablet, putting the bug discussion aside.

We'll come back to this later.

When to use it: Use this to park a topic until later.

は marks this topic as the one you will delay.

  5. Leo turns in his chair to check the wall clock as the meeting nears its end.

    We're about out of time.

When to use it: Use this when the meeting time is almost gone.

そろそろ means the time has nearly come, not already passed.

  6. Mori-san closes the tablet while Leo sits nearby as they wrap up for the day.

Let's leave it here for today.

When to use it: Use this to close the meeting for today.

まで marks the point where you stop today.
