The usual in Japanese

Leo ducks into Kissa Hotaru after work. Masako already knows the cup. He asks for the usual, then holds out the stamp card.

The card is one stamp short again. Masako is not surprised. In the booth, Goro still has not finished his blend.

You will order your usual, switch when you want something else, and talk about a stamp card.

By the end of this lesson

Ask for your usual and talk about a stamp card.

The usual, please.
I'll have something else today.
The stamp card, please.
It's one stamp short.
Please stamp it.
You order the same thing every time.

Scene — the usual cup

The lane is quiet after the rain. Leo hangs his clear umbrella and takes a stool at the wooden counter. Masako wipes a cup that does not match the others.

In the corner booth, Goro's blend coffee has gone cold beside thick toast. The stamp card by the till is always one mark short.

After the rain, Leo hangs his umbrella and takes a stool while Masako wipes a mismatched cup and Goro sits beside his untouched coffee and toast.

Learn — order and stamps

Six lines cover a usual order, a change of mind, and the kissa stamp card.

You will ask for a stamp and notice when one is missing.

  1. Leo gestures toward the siphon coffee as Masako waits across the counter.

  4. Masako checks Leo’s stamp card and finds its final stamp space empty.

    It's one stamp short.

When to use it: Use this when a card still needs one more stamp.
