Street food stall in Japanese

Leo walks Yanaka Ginza and stops at Kenta's croquette stand. The fryer pops. Goro is already there with two croquettes on a paper tray.

You will order street food, ask what is inside, then ask for sauce or a bag.

Keep it polite. Kenta talks fast, but your lines stay です and ます.

By the end of this lesson

Order street food at a stall and ask what is in it.

One croquette, please.
What's in it?
Is it potato?
Sauce, please.
Please put them in a bag.
Two, please.

Scene — a busy stall

Yanaka Ginza is busy this afternoon. Leo follows the smell of frying oil to Kenta's croquette stand. A cat sits on a step. Kenta holds long cooking chopsticks over the fryer.

In front of the counter, Goro already has two croquettes on a paper tray. His blend coffee is not here. He never finishes a drink anyway.

Leo arrives at Kenta's croquette stand while Goro waits with two croquettes and a cat sits on a step.

Learn — order at the stall

These six lines let you order at a stall, ask what is inside, and ask for sauce or a bag.

One line changes the number to two.

  1. Leo requests a croquette from Kenta at the counter.

    One croquette, please.

When to use it: Use this to order one croquette at a stall.

を marks the food you are asking for.

Say it: The っ in コロッケ is a small pause.

  2. Leo points toward the filling of a croquette broken open on the counter.

    What's in it?

When to use it: Ask this when you need to know the filling.

入っています means the filling is in there now.

  3. Kenta holds up a croquette so Leo can see its pale potato filling.

    Is it potato?

When to use it: Use this to check if the filling is potato.

か at the end turns this into a polite question.

  4. Leo reaches for the sauce bottle beside his croquette.

    Sauce, please.

When to use it: Use this when you want sauce on the food.

お願いします makes this a polite request, not a command.

Say it: The u in します is almost silent.

  5. Leo holds out his croquettes as Kenta opens a paper bag to pack them.

Please put them in a bag.

When to use it: Use this when you want the food in a bag.

入れてください is the て-form plus ください, a polite request.

  6. Leo indicates the croquettes in the display while Goro waits with his own two on a paper tray.

    Two, please.

When to use it: Use this to change the order to two.

で marks two as the amount for this order.
