Traditional Chinese - Asking Directions

Lesson 106 of 152

A bright Taiwan street corner with signs, scooters, and an MRT entrance, introducing a Traditional Chinese Taiwan Mandarin lesson on asking directions.

Goal: Find your way with polite, natural Taiwan Mandarin.

Free traditional Chinese lessons with Taiwan Mandarin audio and speaking practice.

Lost near the MRT? Looking for a café that is somehow always “just around the corner”? You’re in the right place.

Level A1: in this lesson, you’ll practice polite direction questions like 不好意思,請問___在哪裡? (Bù hǎo yìsi, qǐngwèn ___ zài nǎlǐ?) and 請問___怎麼走? (Qǐngwèn ___ zěnme zǒu?), plus simple answers like 直走 (Zhí zǒu), 左轉 (Zuǒ zhuǎn), and 在右邊 (Zài yòubiān). By the end, you’ll be able to ask where something is, check whether it’s near or far, and understand basic left-right-straight directions in Taiwan. Yak Yacker says: don’t wander—yacker your way there.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Politely ask “Excuse me, where is ___?” with 不好意思,請問___在哪裡? (Bù hǎo yìsi, qǐngwèn ___ zài nǎlǐ?).
  • Ask how to get somewhere using 請問,___要怎麼去? (Qǐngwèn, ___ yào zěnme qù?) and 請問___怎麼走? (Qǐngwèn ___ zěnme zǒu?).
  • Understand and say simple directions: 直走 (Zhí zǒu), 左轉 (Zuǒ zhuǎn), 右轉 (Yòu zhuǎn), 在左邊 (Zài zuǒbiān), and 在右邊 (Zài yòubiān).
  • Check distance and direction with 離這裡近嗎? (Lí zhèlǐ jìn ma?), 離這裡遠嗎? (Lí zhèlǐ yuǎn ma?), and 往___是走這邊嗎? (Wǎng ___ shì zǒu zhèbiān ma?).
