Small talk at the co-working space in Traditional Chinese
It is Maya’s second week at the co-working space, and Friday feels surprisingly busy. Yi-Jun offers to get coffee and returns with a story about how far she went for it.

Scene — Friday at the shared desk
Maya is at her co-working desk on Friday of her second week. There is still plenty to do, but she has a moment to talk with Yi-Jun.
A coffee break sounds welcome. Yi-Jun will return with two cups and a description of the trip that may be a little more dramatic than the trip itself.
Learn — a break in the workday
Listen to six lines you can use between tasks at a shared desk. Start with the busy day, then move naturally toward a break, coffee, or plans after work.
Notice how a short question at the end invites your coworker to join in.
今天蠻忙的，對吧？
It’s pretty busy today, isn’t it?
When to use it: Say this to invite a coworker to agree about a busy day.
The short question at the end asks the other person to confirm your observation.
要不要休息一下？
Want to take a break?
When to use it: Ask this when you and a coworker could pause for a moment.
Repeating the choice around the negative word makes a casual yes-or-no question.
Say it: The middle syllable changes to second tone before the following fourth tone.
我要去買咖啡，你要喝什麼？
I’m getting coffee; what do you want?
When to use it: Offer to pick up a drink when you are heading out for coffee.
The question word stays where the answer would go.
下班後有什麼安排嗎？
Any plans after work?
When to use it: Ask a coworker about plans once the workday ends.
Here the question asks whether there are any plans, rather than requesting a particular plan.
真不敢相信已經禮拜五了
I can’t believe it’s already Friday.
When to use it: Say this when the week has gone by faster than you expected.
The final particle marks Friday as a change from what you expected.
你在這裡工作很久了嗎？
Have you worked here a long time?
When to use it: Ask someone you have met at the shared workspace about their time there.
The final question particle turns the statement into a yes-or-no question.
Story — Yi-Jun’s coffee story
Listen as Maya and Yi-Jun pause beside their desks on a busy Friday. They talk about taking a break before Yi-Jun heads downstairs for coffee.
When she returns with two cups, her account of the trip sounds surprisingly adventurous.
Yi-Jun你好，今天蠻忙的，對吧？Hi. Pretty busy today, isn’t it?
Maya對啊，真不敢相信已經禮拜五了。Yeah. I can’t believe it’s already Friday.- Yi-Jun要不要休息一下？Want to take a break?
- Maya好啊。我要去買咖啡，你要喝什麼？Sure. I’m getting coffee; what do you want?
- Yi-Jun你忙，我去買啦。You’re busy. I’ll get it.
- Yi-Jun returns with two coffees.
- Yi-Jun我買了兩杯，跑了三條街耶。I bought two cups. I went three blocks for them!
- Maya樓下就有咖啡店啊。But there’s a coffee shop downstairs.
- Yi-Jun好啦，其實就在樓下。Okay, it was actually just downstairs.
- Maya謝謝。你在這裡工作很久了嗎？Thanks. Have you worked here a long time?
- Yi-Jun半年了。你呢？Half a year. How about you?
- Maya才第二個禮拜。下班後有什麼安排嗎？It’s only my second week. Any plans after work?
- Yi-Jun沒有耶，想回家休息。Not really. I want to go home and rest.
