Welcome back! Today we’re clocking in—Mandarin style. No time card needed, just your voice and a tiny bit of workplace courage.
These phrases will help you talk about what you do, where you work, when you start and finish, and how to ask for help at work.
Level A2: In this lesson, you’ll practice practical work phrases like 你是做什麼工作的? (Nǐ shì zuò shénme gōngzuò de?), 我在___上班 (Wǒ zài ___ shàngbān), and 會議幾點? (Huìyì jǐ diǎn?). You’ll also learn how to say you’re job hunting, on break, full-time, or part-time. It’s everyday Taiwan Mandarin for small talk, schedules, and office life—work it, Yak Yacker style.
After this lesson you'll be able to:
Ask someone what they do for work using 你是做什麼工作的? (Nǐ shì zuò shénme gōngzuò de?).
Say your job, workplace, field, and schedule with phrases like 我是___ (Wǒ shì ___), 我在___上班 (Wǒ zài ___ shàngbān), and 我做全職 (Wǒ zuò quánzhí).
Talk about work times, days off, meetings, breaks, and help requests in natural A2 Taiwan Mandarin.
Ready? Let's go!
When you tap play on phrases, we track your progress through this lesson.
1. Reading + Listening Practice
Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.
你是做什麼工作的?
Nǐ shì zuò shénme gōngzuò de?

Meaning: 你是做什麼工作的? (Nǐ shì zuò shénme gōngzuò de?) means “What do you do for work?”
When to use: Use this in friendly conversation when you want to ask someone about their job.
Tip: Don’t translate word-for-word as 做什麼工作嗎 (zuò shénme gōngzuò ma). This chunk already has the question word 什麼 (shénme), so you don’t need 嗎 (ma).
