Traditional Chinese - Disagreement Softeners

Lesson 83 of 152

Two coworkers in Taiwan discuss an idea over coffee, with Traditional Chinese text showing Taiwan Mandarin disagreement softeners. The scene feels friendly and thoughtful, focused on polite disagreement.

Goal: Disagree without turning the room into a courtroom.

Sometimes the smartest Mandarin is not the most direct Mandarin. In Taiwan, a soft question can keep a conversation friendly even when you see things differently.

Level B1: In this lesson, you’ll practice four smooth ways to disagree politely: inviting another angle, questioning whether something is always true, suggesting another possibility, and saying “you may be right, but…”. These phrases are social glue—useful in meetings, group chats, and any moment when your inner yak wants to say, “Hmm… maybe not.”

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Use 會不會有別的角度可以看? (Huì bú huì yǒu bié de jiǎodù kěyǐ kàn?) to invite a different perspective.
  • Use 我在想,這是不是不一定都成立。 (Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng dōu chénglì.) to gently question a general claim.
  • Use 你不覺得也有可能是___嗎? (Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì ___ ma?) to suggest another possible explanation.
  • Use 你可能是對的,不過 ___ (Nǐ kěnéng shì duì de, búguò ___) to acknowledge someone before offering your own view.

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

會不會有別的角度可以看?

Huì bú huì yǒu bié de jiǎodù kěyǐ kàn?

Could there be another way to look at it?

Meaning: Could there be another way to look at it?

When to use: Use this when you do not want to directly say someone is wrong, but you want to invite a different perspective.

Tip: Don’t use this with an angry tone. The phrase is soft, but your voice needs to stay curious too.

會不會有別的角度可以看?也許客人不是不喜歡,是不清楚怎麼用。

Huì bú huì yǒu bié de jiǎodù kěyǐ kàn? Yěxǔ kèrén bú shì bù xǐhuān, shì bù qīngchǔ zěnme yòng.

Could there be another way to look at it? Maybe customers don’t dislike it; maybe they don’t understand how to use it.
我懂你的意思,可是會不會有別的角度可以看?

Wǒ dǒng nǐ de yìsi, kěshì huì bú huì yǒu bié de jiǎodù kěyǐ kàn?

I understand what you mean, but could there be another way to look at it?

我在想,這是不是不一定都成立。

Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng dōu chénglì.

I wonder if that's always true.

Meaning: I wonder if that’s always true.

When to use: Use this to politely question whether a statement works in every situation.

Tip: This does not mean “that is false.” It means you are gently questioning whether it is always true.

我在想,這是不是不一定都成立。有些小公司可能沒有那麼多預算。

Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng dōu chénglì. Yǒuxiē xiǎo gōngsī kěnéng méiyǒu nàme duō yùsuàn.

I wonder if that’s always true. Some small companies may not have that much budget.
你說大家都喜歡這個設計,但我在想,這是不是不一定都成立。

Nǐ shuō dàjiā dōu xǐhuān zhège shèjì, dàn wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng dōu chénglì.

You said everyone likes this design, but I wonder if that’s always true.

你不覺得也有可能是___嗎?

Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì ___ ma?

Don't you think it might be ___?

Meaning: Don’t you think it might be ___?

When to use: Use this when you want to suggest another possible reason or explanation without sounding too direct.

Tip: Remember to put your idea after 是 (shì): 你不覺得也有可能是時間不夠嗎? (Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì shíjiān bú gòu ma?)

你不覺得也有可能是時間太趕嗎?

Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì shíjiān tài gǎn ma?

Don’t you think it might also be that the timing is too rushed?
你不覺得也有可能是大家還不熟悉流程嗎?

Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì dàjiā hái bù shúxī liúchéng ma?

Don’t you think it might also be that everyone still isn’t familiar with the process?

你可能是對的,不過 ___

Nǐ kěnéng shì duì de, búguò ___

You may be right, but ___

Meaning: You may be right, but ___

When to use: Use this when you want to show respect for the other person’s point before giving a different opinion.

你可能是對的,不過我們還是要看一下數據。

Nǐ kěnéng shì duì de, búguò wǒmen háishì yào kàn yíxià shùjù.

You may be right, but we should still look at the data.
你可能是對的,不過我覺得現在決定有點太早。

Nǐ kěnéng shì duì de, búguò wǒ juéde xiànzài juédìng yǒudiǎn tài zǎo.

You may be right, but I think deciding now is a bit too early.

2. Conversational Listening Practice

Hear phrases in a real mini-conversation.

Anna and David are discussing whether the team should solve delays by working overtime every day.

Anna and David talk in a modern Taiwan office, using Traditional Chinese Taiwan Mandarin to disagree politely. Their expressions are calm, showing a respectful discussion about different angles.

Do Anna and David end up discussing another possible cause of the problem?

David

我覺得大家都應該每天加班,進度才會快。

Wǒ juéde dàjiā dōu yīnggāi měitiān jiābān, jìndù cái huì kuài.

I think everyone should work overtime every day; then progress will be faster.

我在想,這是不是不一定都成立。

Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng dōu chénglì.

I wonder if that’s always true.

David

為什麼?時間比較多,事情應該會做得比較快吧。

Wèishéme? Shíjiān bǐjiào duō, shìqíng yīnggāi huì zuò de bǐjiào kuài ba.

Why? If there’s more time, things should get done faster, right?

會不會有別的角度可以看?如果流程不順,時間再多也沒用。

Huì bú huì yǒu bié de jiǎodù kěyǐ kàn? Rúguǒ liúchéng bù shùn, shíjiān zài duō yě méi yòng.

Could there be another way to look at it? If the process isn’t smooth, more time still won’t help.

你是說問題可能不是時間?

Nǐ shì shuō wèntí kěnéng bú shì shíjiān?

You mean the problem might not be time?

對。你不覺得也有可能是溝通不清楚嗎?

Duì. Nǐ bù juéde yě yǒu kěnéng shì gōutōng bù qīngchǔ ma?

Right. Don’t you think it might also be unclear communication?

David

嗯,有道理。那我們先看看流程好了。

Ńg, yǒu dàolǐ. Nà wǒmen xiān kànkan liúchéng hǎo le.

Hmm, that makes sense. Then let’s look at the process first.

你可能是對的,不過我們可以先試試看調整溝通方式。

Nǐ kěnéng shì duì de, búguò wǒmen kěyǐ xiān shìshìkàn tiáozhěng gōutōng fāngshì.

You may be right, but we can first try adjusting how we communicate.
