The doctor's questions in Traditional Chinese
At the neighborhood clinic, Dr. Chen asks Maya about her pain, allergies, and medicine. She answers clearly, then asks what to avoid and when to come back.

The doctor recommends rest and no iced drinks. Outside, Maya passes the bubble-tea stand and tries not to look over.

Listen for the difference between a question about avoiding something and one about returning for a follow-up.

The pain is about a five.
When to use it: Use this to rate your pain when a doctor asks how bad it is.
「分」 here means a point on a pain scale.
Say it: 五 has a third tone; before 分, it stays low.
我對盤尼西林過敏
I'm allergic to penicillin.
When to use it: Tell a doctor this before discussing medicine or treatment.
「對」 links you to the thing that causes your allergy.
我吃了藥，可是沒有用
I took medicine, but it didn't help.
When to use it: Use this when medicine you already tried did not help.
「了」 marks taking the medicine as a completed event.
我需要避免什麼？
What do I need to avoid?
When to use it: Ask this when you need to know what not to do or eat.
「什麼」 stays in place in this information question.
我什麼時候要回診？
When do I need a follow-up?
When to use it: Ask this to find out when you should return to the clinic.
「回診」 means returning to the clinic for a follow-up.
這會傳染嗎？
Is it contagious?
When to use it: Ask this when you want to know whether an illness can spread.
「嗎」 turns this into a yes-or-no question.
Story — Dr. Chen checks in
Maya visits Dr. Chen, who asks about her pain, allergies, and medicine. She asks what to avoid and what to expect next.
After the appointment, the bubble-tea stand is waiting outside.

- Dr. Chen你對什麼藥過敏？What medicine are you allergic to?
- Maya我對盤尼西林過敏。I'm allergic to penicillin.
- Dr. Chen你對花生也過敏嗎？Are you allergic to peanuts too?
- Maya我對花生過敏。I'm allergic to peanuts.
- Dr. Chen你吃過藥了嗎？Have you taken any medicine?
- Maya我吃了藥，可是沒有用。I took medicine, but it didn't help.
- Dr. Chen先休息幾天，也不要喝冰的喔。Rest for a few days, and don't drink anything iced.
- Maya我需要避免什麼？What do I need to avoid?
- Dr. Chen先不要喝冰的，休息幾天就好。Just avoid iced drinks for now and rest for a few days.
- Maya我什麼時候要回診？When do I need a follow-up?
- Dr. Chen下個禮拜回診就好。Come back for a follow-up next week.
- Maya這會傳染嗎？Is it contagious?
- Dr. Chen目前看起來不會傳染。It doesn't look contagious at the moment.
- Maya leaves the clinic and keeps her eyes straight ahead as she passes the bubble-tea stand.
