Welcome to lesson 25 — your question-asking toolkit is getting delightfully dangerous now. In the best way.
Today’s chunks help you keep a conversation moving when you don’t know a word, a time, or what something is. Tiny questions, big yak-power.
Level A1: In this lesson, you’ll practice asking everyday questions with ___是什麼? (___ shì shénme?), ___是什麼時候? (___ shì shénme shíhòu?), ___是幾點? (___ shì jǐ diǎn?), 你可以___嗎? (nǐ kěyǐ ___ ma?), and ___怎麼說? (___ zěnme shuō?). These are small phrases you can use constantly in Taiwan — at class, with friends, or when pointing at something mysterious and asking what it is.
After this lesson you'll be able to:
Ask what something is using ___是什麼? (___ shì shénme?).
Ask when an event happens using ___是什麼時候? (___ shì shénme shíhòu?) and ask for clock time with ___是幾點? (___ shì jǐ diǎn?).
Ask someone to do a simple action with 你可以___嗎? (nǐ kěyǐ ___ ma?).
Ask how to say a word or phrase with ___怎麼說? (___ zěnme shuō?).
At A1, use these question frames to keep a basic conversation going even when you are missing information.
Ready? Let's go!
When you tap play on phrases, we track your progress through this lesson.
1. Reading + Listening Practice
Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.
___是什麼
___ shì shénme?
What is ___?
Meaning: ___是什麼? (___ shì shénme?) means “What is ___?” Use it to ask the identity, name, or meaning of something.
When to use: Use ___是什麼? (___ shì shénme?) when you can point to or name something but don’t know what it is.
Tip: Don’t put 什麼 (shénme) at the very beginning here. In this pattern, the thing you ask about comes first: 這是什麼? (Zhè shì shénme?)
這是什麼
Zhè shì shénme?
What is this?
這個字是什麼
Zhège zì shì shénme?
What is this word?
___是什麼時候?
___ shì shénme shíhòu?
When is ___?
Meaning: ___是什麼時候? (___ shì shénme shíhòu?) means “When is ___?” It asks about the date, day, or general time of an event.
When to use: Use ___是什麼時候? (___ shì shénme shíhòu?) when you want the schedule, not necessarily the exact clock time.
Tip: Use 什麼時候 (shénme shíhòu) for “when.” Use 幾點 (jǐ diǎn) when you specifically want a clock time.
你的生日是什麼時候?
Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhòu?
When is your birthday?
明天的課是什麼時候?
Míngtiān de kè shì shénme shíhòu?
When is tomorrow’s class?
___是幾點
___ shì jǐ diǎn?
What time is ___?
Meaning: ___是幾點? (___ shì jǐ diǎn?) means “What time is ___?” It asks for the exact hour on the clock.
When to use: Use ___是幾點? (___ shì jǐ diǎn?) for meetings, classes, dinner plans, train times, and other clock-time questions.
Tip: 幾點 (jǐ diǎn) asks for a time like 兩點 (liǎng diǎn), not a full date.
會議是幾點
Huìyì shì jǐ diǎn?
What time is the meeting?
晚餐是幾點
Wǎncān shì jǐ diǎn?
What time is dinner?
你可以___嗎?
nǐ kěyǐ ___ ma?
Can you ___?
Meaning: 你可以___嗎? (nǐ kěyǐ ___ ma?) means “Can you ___?” It is a useful way to ask someone to do something simple.
When to use: Use 你可以___嗎? (nǐ kěyǐ ___ ma?) when asking for help, repetition, writing something down, or another small action.
你可以幫我嗎
Nǐ kěyǐ bāng wǒ ma?
Can you help me?
你可以再說一次嗎?
Nǐ kěyǐ zài shuō yí cì ma?
Can you say it one more time?
___怎麼說
___ zěnme shuō?
How do you say ___?
Meaning: ___怎麼說? (___ zěnme shuō?) means “How do you say ___?” It helps you ask how to express a word or idea.
When to use: Use ___怎麼說? (___ zěnme shuō?) when you want to ask how to say something in Chinese, English, or another language.
這個中文怎麼說?
Zhège Zhōngwén zěnme shuō?
How do you say this in Chinese?
「謝謝」英文怎麼說?
“Xièxie” Yīngwén zěnme shuō?
How do you say “謝謝” in English?
