Moving on in Traditional Chinese

At Banyan Breakfast, Yi-Jun is still on Zhi-Ming's project. The meeting ran long, and she wants one more detail. You close that topic and turn the talk toward Tainan.

Learn six ways to leave a point, switch subjects, or say you will come back later. These lines keep a chat moving without sounding rude.

A-Li sits nearby with soy milk he still has not finished. The fortune slip stays in the till; nobody solves it today.

Scene — a topic left at breakfast

Late morning at Banyan Breakfast. Maya and Yi-Jun have been talking about Zhi-Ming's project after a long meeting.

Yi-Jun still wants one more detail. Maya is ready to leave that topic and talk about Tainan instead.

A-Li sits on two stools with soy milk he has not finished. Nobody opens the fortune slip today.

Maya sits back at a breakfast table after a long meeting while Yi-Jun leans in over papers, and A-Li occupies two stools beside unfinished soy milk and an unopened fortune slip.

Learn — closing a topic

Here are six lines for closing a topic and moving on. Listen to each line, then say it out loud.

Notice 得 in 講得差不多了. It shows how far the talking has gone, not who owns the topic.

  1. Maya presses both palms down toward the table to close the topic while Yi-Jun still hunches with a pen over papers.

    這個就先這樣吧

    Let's leave this here.

    When to use it: Use this when you want to pause a topic without finishing every detail.

    就先這樣吧 stops a topic for now, and does not drop it forever.

  2. Maya turns toward the sunny window with an open redirecting hand while Yi-Jun stays facing the papers, caught by the change.

    我們聊點別的吧

    Let's talk about something else.

    When to use it: Use this to switch the conversation to a new subject.

    點 here means a little of a new topic, not the clock.

  3. Maya slides a closed notebook to the far edge of the table for later while Yi-Jun reaches toward it.

    這個晚點再回來講

    We'll come back to this later.

    When to use it: Use this when you will return to the same point later.

    晚點再回來講 promises a later return, not a final stop.

  4. Maya leans back stretching after a long meeting while Yi-Jun still studies papers with head propped on one hand.

    這個我們講得差不多了

    We've talked about this enough.

    When to use it: Use this when a topic has already been covered enough.

    得 after 講 marks how far the talking has gone.

    Say it: 得 here is a light neutral tone after the verb.

  5. Maya holds up a halt palm as Yi-Jun leans in close wanting more detail, with A-Li sitting on two stools.

    總之，就先不要講太細了

    Anyway, let's not go into too much detail.

    When to use it: Use this to stop a topic from going into extra detail.

    總之 sums up first, then you ask to keep the rest brief.

  6. Maya rests folded hands on a stacked closed notebook, finished with the subject, while Yi-Jun sits back with hands in lap.

    關於這個，我想說的就這些

    That's all I wanted to say about this.

    When to use it: Use this to close your own remarks on a topic.

    關於這個 names the topic you are finishing in this sentence.

    Say it: 的 after 說 is a light neutral tone.

Story — from the project to Tainan

Maya and Yi-Jun wrap up talk about work at Banyan Breakfast. Then the conversation turns to Tainan.

A-Li is at the next table, and his soy milk is still unfinished.

  1. Yi-Jun進度的事，你還想再講嗎？Do you still want to talk about the progress?
  2. Maya這個我們講得差不多了。We've talked about this enough.
  3. Yi-Jun那客戶回覆呢？要不要再對一下？What about the client's reply? Want to check it again?
  4. Maya總之，就先不要講太細了。Anyway, let's not go into too much detail.
  5. Yi-Jun好喔，那工作就先放著。Okay, then we'll leave work for now.
  6. Maya這個就先這樣吧。Let's leave this here.
  7. A-Li你們講完了喔。Oh, you two are done talking.
  8. Yi-Jun那我們現在講什麼？So what should we talk about now?
  9. Maya我們聊點別的吧。Let's talk about something else.
  10. Yi-Jun臺南啊？你不是說想去？Tainan? Didn't you say you wanted to go?
  11. Maya對啊，我打算去臺南。Yeah, I plan to go to Tainan.
  12. Yi-Jun高鐵票跟住宿，要不要現在查？Want to look up HSR tickets and lodging now?
  13. Maya這個晚點再回來講。We'll come back to this later.
  14. Yi-Jun好，那工作那邊你還有要補的嗎？Okay, then do you still have anything to add about work?
  15. Maya關於這個，我想說的就這些。That's all I wanted to say about this.
  16. A-Li豆漿還沒喝完。The soy milk still isn't finished.
