Traditional Chinese - Checking Understanding

Lesson 96 of 152

A friendly Taiwan Mandarin lesson scene showing two people checking understanding with Traditional Chinese phrases on a whiteboard. The topic is checking understanding in a warm classroom-like setting.

Goal: Friendly ways to make sure everyone is still with you.

Free traditional Chinese lessons with Taiwan Mandarin audio and speaking practice.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can say is, “Wait—does that make sense?” In this lesson, you’ll learn natural Taiwan Mandarin phrases that help conversations feel clear, patient, and a little less awkward.

Level A2: Today you’ll practice checking whether someone understands, can follow your explanation, or wants you to repeat something. These phrases are useful when giving directions, explaining steps, teaching a friend, or making sure you didn’t accidentally yak too fast.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Ask directly if someone understands with 你了解嗎? (Nǐ liǎojiě ma?) and 你懂我的意思嗎? (Nǐ dǒng wǒ de yìsi ma?)
  • Check whether your explanation is clear with 這樣清楚嗎? (Zhèyàng qīngchǔ ma?) and 我這樣說清楚嗎? (Wǒ zhèyàng shuō qīngchǔ ma?)
  • Offer help by repeating or explaining another way with 要我再說一次嗎? (Yào wǒ zài shuō yí cì ma?) and 要不要我換個方式說? (Yào bú yào wǒ huàn ge fāngshì shuō?)
  • Use A2-friendly phrases to pause and check comfort during a conversation.
A teacher in Taiwan points to Traditional Chinese notes while a learner nods and asks for clarification. The scene highlights Taiwan Mandarin phrases for asking if an explanation is clear.
