Not what I expected in Traditional Chinese

Auntie Lin hints that Banyan Breakfast has a secret recipe. Maya expects a long story, not something this ordinary.

A-Li sits on two stools with soy milk still unfinished. The fortune slip stays in the till; nobody reads it today.

Scene — a secret recipe

Morning rush at Banyan Breakfast in Da'an. Maya stands at the counter while A-Jie leans in, sure he almost has the secret.

A-Li occupies two stools at the back, soy milk untouched. Auntie Lin looks ready to tell them, and the fortune slip stays in the till.

Learn — when it turned out differently

Here are six ways to say a result was not what you expected. Listen, then say each line out loud.

Notice how one pair flags surprise, while another marks the opposite of your plan.

  1. Auntie Lin adds another egg onto an egg pancake on the counter while A-Jie freezes at how simple the secret is.

    沒想到居然這麼簡單

    I never expected it to be so easy.

    When to use it: Use this when a task or secret was far simpler than you pictured.

    居然 flags surprise that the result is this simple, not only that you did not see it coming.

    Say it: The first syllable of 居然 stays high and level.

  2. From above, Maya stands trapped in a messier breakfast rush with both hands full as the simple plan turns into extra trouble.

    結果反而更麻煩

    It turned out to be even more trouble.

    When to use it: Use this when the outcome brought more trouble than you expected.

    反而 marks that things went the opposite way from what you planned.

  3. From Auntie Lin's shoulder, Maya looks toward A-Li the yak occupying two stools at the back with soy milk untouched.

    竟然是他

    It turned out to be him.

    When to use it: Use this when the person who did it is a surprise.

    竟然 flags shock at the identity; 是他 names who it was.

    Say it: 竟 is a sharp falling fourth tone.

  4. A-Jie stares at the counter as the truth there fails to match the theory.

    跟我想的完全不一樣

    Completely different from what I thought.

    When to use it: Use this when reality does not match the picture you had.

    的 after 想 turns it into a noun phrase meaning what I thought.

    Say it: 的 after 想 is a light neutral tone.

  5. Maya stands in profile toward the back, taken aback at the outcome, while A-Li the yak still occupies two stools with soy milk untouched.

    出乎意料

    Beyond expectations.

    When to use it: Use this short comment when a result overshoots every guess.

    This set phrase names a result that went beyond what anyone pictured.

  6. The open till holds a fortune slip in the foreground, with Auntie Lin hands-on-hips and A-Li the yak unmoved on two stools, both soft in the background.

    這下可好

    Well, now we're in for it.

    When to use it: Use this when a twist leaves you facing extra trouble.

    這下 marks this new moment; 可好 often sounds dry, as if trouble has just begun.

    Say it: The first third tone in 可好 rises before the next third.

Story — extra egg

Listen as Maya learns the shop's so-called secret recipe. It is not a hidden spice.

A-Jie has been guessing for weeks. A-Li's soy milk is still there, unfinished.

  1. Auntie Lin美女，今天想不想知道招牌的祕密？Want to know the specialty's secret today?
  2. Maya招牌是什麼？What's the specialty?
  3. Auntie Lin就是我們的蛋餅啊。It's our egg pancake.
  4. A-Jie可是聽說還有別的步驟。But I heard there are other steps.
  5. Maya裡面有蛋嗎？Is there egg in it?
  6. Auntie Lin對啊，再多加一顆蛋就好。Right, you just add one more egg.
  7. Maya沒想到居然這麼簡單。I never expected it to be so easy.
  8. A-Jie我上次自己試，光是備料就忙了半天。I tried it myself last time, and just the prep kept me busy for hours.
  9. A-Jie結果反而更麻煩。It turned out to be even more trouble.
  10. Maya跟我想的完全不一樣。Completely different from what I thought.
  11. A-Jie那是誰先這樣點的？Who ordered it that way first?
  12. Auntie Lin欸，你看後面那位。Hey, look at the one in the back.
  13. Maya竟然是他。It turned out to be him.
  14. A-Li我只是路過。I was only passing by.
  15. A-Jie出乎意料。Beyond expectations.
  16. A-Jie那我來做，整店都加蛋！Then I'll make them, extra egg for the whole shop!
  17. Auntie Lin這下可好。Well, now we're in for it.
  18. A-Li豆漿還沒喝完。The soy milk still isn't finished.
  19. Maya所以沒有隱藏的香料喔？So there's no hidden spice?
  20. Auntie Lin沒有啦，就這樣。Nope, that's all.
