The paperwork in Spanish

Justin has an appointment at a public office, but an appointment is only the beginning. He still has to explain his purpose, identify a missing document, and find the right line.

This lesson gives you six practical chunks for handling a trámite politely with usted.

By the end, Justin knows exactly what to bring next time.

By the end of this lesson

Explain why you're there, identify what's missing, and ask what to do next at an office.

  • Vengo a ___I'm here to ___
  • Me falta ___I'm missing ___
  • ¿Me puede orientar? Can you point me the right way?
  • ¿Dónde hago la fila?Where do I line up?
  • ¿Este es el formato? Is this the right form?
  • Vuelvo el ___ con ___I'll come back on ___ with ___

Scene — the government office

It is late morning at a public service office near colonia El Laurel. Justin has brought a folder, Michael has come along, and Yako is waiting outside on two chairs.

A clerk is calling people from several lines, and one window handles trámite questions.

Justin stands inside a public service office near colonia El Laurel with a folder while Michael waits beside him, several orderly lines lead to service windows, and a clerk assists people at one trámite window.

Learn — get through a trámite

These chunks help you move through paperwork without sounding abrupt. Notice how the questions use puede and the formal usted.

Some lines name your purpose, while others help you locate the correct form or queue.

  1. Justin stands at the trámite counter with his folder open and gestures toward himself and the documents he brought to explain his purpose.

    Vengo a ___

    I'm here to ___

When to use it: Use this to state the purpose of your visit when you arrive at an office or service window.

Learn vengo a plus an infinitive as one useful piece; it is polite without sounding overly formal.

Say it: Vengo sounds like BEN-goh; keep the first vowel short.

  2. Michael searches his open folder with a worried expression and finds an empty document pocket while people wait in a different line behind him.

    Me falta ___

    I'm missing ___

When to use it: Say this when you realize that a required document, detail, or item is not with you.

Me falta literally presents the missing item as lacking to me; the noun after it identifies what you need.

Say it: Stress FAL-ta, not me.

  3. Justin leans toward the clerk with an inquisitive raised hand as the clerk points clearly toward the correct service window.

    ¿Me puede orientar?

Can you point me the right way?

When to use it: Use this formal request when you need an employee to explain the correct procedure or destination.

Puede is usted; with friends, puedes would be less formal, but this office setting calls for puede.

Say it: Orientar has four clear syllables: oh-ryen-TAR.

  4. Michael stands between two distinct lines, looking from one queue to the other and pointing toward the floor as he seeks the correct place to wait.

    ¿Dónde hago la fila?

    Where do I line up?

When to use it: Ask this when an office has several queues and you need to know where your request belongs.

Hago is the irregular first-person form of hacer, so learn ¿Dónde hago la fila? as a complete chunk.

Say it: Hago begins with a soft H sound in spelling but no spoken h.

  5. Justin holds up a blank official form at the trámite window and compares it with a sample form while studying the clerk's confirmation.

    ¿Este es el formato?

    Is this the right form?

When to use it: Use this while checking a printed form before you spend time filling it out.

Formato means form here, especially an official printed document; the demonstrative este points to a masculine item.

Say it: Format-o ends with a clear O, unlike English form.

  6. Michael calmly places a missing document beside his folder and gestures toward a future return visit with a small blank calendar page and a hand of supporting papers.

    Vuelvo el ___ con ___

    I'll come back on ___ with ___

When to use it: Say this when staff tell you to return later with a missing document or requirement.

Vuelvo can mean I come back; fill the first space with a day and the second with what you will bring.

Say it: Vuelvo starts like BWEHL-bo, with both vowels heard.
