Scene — a small birthday cake

It's a warm afternoon at Café Laurel. Amanda has just come downstairs from her apartment, and Michael asks her to sit at the usual table.

A small cake waits behind the coffee cups, with four people gathered around it. Justin knows it's Amanda's birthday, but Yako is pretending not to notice the frosting.

Four people gather around a small birthday cake at a café table while a shaggy dog pretends not to notice the frosting.

Learn — birthday wishes and a toast

These chunks cover three useful birthday moments: congratulations, a wish for fun, and a toast.

You'll also learn two natural responses to good wishes and an unexpected gift.

  1. Justin raises his coffee cup toward Amanda and congratulates her.

    Felicidades

    Congrats

When to use it: Say this to congratulate someone on a happy event.

It works for birthdays, good news, and other celebrations.

    Say it: feh-lee-see-DAH-dehs

  2. Michael leans forward wishing Amanda a happy birthday with both hands on his heart.

    Feliz cumpleaños

    Happy birthday

When to use it: Say this directly to someone on their birthday.

Cumpleaños means birthday; learn the whole chunk as one warm wish.

    Say it: feh-LEES koom-pleh-AH-nyos

  3. Yako sits up on his two chairs and appears to speak, wishing Amanda a great time.

    Que te diviertas

    Have a great time

When to use it: Say this to wish someone a great time at a party or activity.

At a party, this is a wish, not the goodbye phrase Diviértete.

    Say it: keh teh dee-BYEHR-tahs

  4. Michael clinks his coffee cup against the others' cups in a cheers.

    ¡Salud!

    Cheers

When to use it: Say this when raising a drink together in a toast.

Salud literally means health, but here it is the usual toast.

    Say it: sah-LOOD

  5. Amanda smiles with a hand on her heart, thanking everyone.

    Muchas gracias, igual

    Thanks, you too

When to use it: Say this after someone gives you a wish that you can return.

Igual means likewise or you too, so it returns the good wish.

    Say it: MOO-chahs GRAH-see-ahs ee-GWAL

  6. Amanda gestures at the cake with mock protest, saying they didn't have to.

    No tenías que

    You didn't have to

When to use it: Say this warmly when someone gives you an unnecessary gift or surprise.

It shows appreciation, not annoyance, when someone made an extra effort.

    Say it: noh teh-NEE-ahs keh
