What should I wear in Spanish

Justin is standing in the doorway, ready to go out, but he hasn't chosen his clothes yet.

You'll connect cold weather with a useful clothing suggestion, ask what to wear, and say what you're going to put on.

You'll also ask whether someone brought a sweater.

By the end of this lesson

Ask what to wear, say what you'll put on, and connect cold weather with a sweater.

  • ¿Qué me pongo?What should I wear?
  • Me voy a poner ___I'll wear ___
  • Hace frío, ponte ___It's cold, put on ___
  • ¿Traes suéter?Did you bring a sweater?

Scene — the doorway

At the doorway of the building, Justin is about to leave for a morning walk.

Amanda is heading out to work, and Yako is watching from his usual two chairs. The air feels cold.

At the doorway of a colorful building, Justin prepares for a walk, Amanda heads to work, and Yako watches while the chilly blue-sky morning surrounds them.

Learn — weather and clothes

These four chunks help you make a quick clothing decision when the weather changes.

Learn the question, the future plan, the cold-weather suggestion, and the sweater question as complete pieces.

  1. Justin stands at the doorway with puzzled raised hands, asking what he should wear, while Amanda pauses nearby and Yako watches.

    ¿Qué me pongo?

    What should I wear?

When to use it: Ask this when you want advice about which clothes to wear.

Me pongo means I put on; learn the whole question as one useful chunk.

    Say it: keh meh POHN-goh

  2. Justin confidently chooses a warm coat to wear before leaving, while Amanda continues toward work and Yako observes.

    Me voy a poner ___

    I'll wear ___

When to use it: Say this before naming the clothing you plan to put on.

Voy a plus an action means I'm going to do it; add the clothing after poner.

Say it: meh voy ah poh-NEHR

  3. Amanda gestures firmly toward a warm sweater for Justin because the morning is cold, while Justin reaches for it and Yako watches.

    Hace frío, ponte ___

    It's cold, put on ___

When to use it: Use this to suggest a warm layer because the weather is cold.

Ponte means put on, speaking to tú; it comes from ponerse, to put something on.

    Say it: AH-seh FREE-oh, POHN-teh

  4. Justin checks his outfit and asks Amanda whether he brought a sweater, while Amanda faces him and Yako watches from the doorway.

    ¿Traes suéter?

    Did you bring a sweater?

When to use it: Ask this when checking whether someone brought a sweater with them.

Traes means you bring or have with you; suéter is the sweater being checked.

    Say it: trah-es sweh-TEHR

Story — getting dressed
