Yako waits beside him on two chairs, while the clerk checks the destination and reaches for packing materials. The box looks delicate.

Justin stands at a Mexico City shipping counter with a small brown-paper-wrapped box, while Yako waits beside him and a clerk checks the destination and reaches for packing materials.

Learn — send, pack, and track

These six lines help you handle a package at a Mexican shipping counter.

Learn each one as a useful chunk, then notice how the destination fits after Va a.

  1. Justin points directly at the small wrapped box as he says that he wants to send it.

    Quiero enviar esto

    I want to send this

When to use it: Say this when you want to send the item you are holding.

Quiero means I want, and enviar means to send; learn the chunk together.

    Say it: kee-EH-roh en-BYAR EH-stoh

  2. Justin raises one hand in a questioning gesture toward the clerk while keeping the box tucked under his other arm.

    ¿Cuánto tarda?

    How long does it take?

When to use it: Ask this when you want to know the time needed for delivery or another process.

Tarda means it takes time; use cuánto to ask how much time.

    Say it: KWAHN-toh TAR-dah

  3. Justin carefully cradles the package with both hands and warns the clerk that it is fragile.

    Es frágil

    It's fragile

When to use it: Say this to warn someone that the item can break easily.

Frágil has an accent on the á and works for a masculine or feminine item.

    Say it: ehs FRAH-heel

  4. A receipt, printed and handed over.

    ¿Me lo puede empacar?

Can you pack it for me?

When to use it: Ask a clerk politely to pack an item for you.

Puede is formal here because you are speaking politely to the clerk.

Say it: meh loh PWEH-deh em-pah-KAR

  5. The package is ordinary, taped, addressed.

    Va a ___

    It's going to ___

When to use it: Say this before naming the package's destination.

Va a means it's going to; replace the blank with a place.

  6. Justin reaches across the counter with an open hand, asking the clerk for the receipt.

    ¿Me da el comprobante?

    Can I get the receipt?

When to use it: Ask for the receipt or proof of the shipping transaction.

Comprobante means proof or receipt; this polite request uses da, gives.

Say it: meh dah el kom-proh-BAN-teh
