Priya rides the U1 home with Jule after work. Tuesday evening is German class at the Volkshochschule, and Jule wants the details.

You'll say you are doing a German course, when class is, and what you like best.

Class starts at seven. The test is not the favourite part.

Jule already uses du with Priya. Keep the lines short on a crowded train.

Scene — the U1 home

The U1 runs over the brick viaduct toward Görlitzer Bahnhof. Priya and Jule stand by the doors, backpacks on, headphones around Jule's neck.

Tuesday class is soon. Priya still has to say where she studies, when it starts, and what she likes.

Priya and Jule stand by the train doors as the U-Bahn crosses the brick viaduct.

Learn — course, class, favourite

Six lines cover the course, Tuesday class, the start time, and a favourite subject.

You'll also ask when the test is, and name the Volkshochschule.

  1. Priya explains that she goes to adult education classes while Jule listens.

    Ich mache einen Deutschkurs.

    I'm doing a German course.

    When to use it: Tell someone you are taking a German course.

    Use einen with this masculine course word after mache.

  2. Jule shares that music is her favourite subject as Priya listens.

    Mein Lieblingsfach ist ___.

    My favourite subject is ___.

    When to use it: Use this to name your favourite school subject.

    Lieblingsfach is a school subject, not a course activity like speaking.

    Say it: Lieblingsfach puts the stress on the first syllable.

  3. Priya taps a blank planner to show Jule that her class is on Tuesday.

    Am Dienstag habe ich Unterricht.

    I have class on Tuesday.

    When to use it: Say this to name the weekday you have class.

    After Am Dienstag, the verb habe still comes second.

    Say it: The ch in Unterricht is the ich sound.

  4. Jule leans toward Priya with a questioning gesture, asking what time class is.

    Wann ist der Test?

    When is the test?

    When to use it: Ask this when you need the date of a test.

    Learn der with Test, then keep them together.

  5. Priya checks her wristwatch while explaining that class starts at seven.

    Der Unterricht fängt um sieben an.

    Class starts at seven.

    When to use it: Tell someone the time your class begins.

    The prefix an goes to the end of this main clause.

    Say it: fängt uses the umlaut ä.

  6. Jule asks about the test, and Priya responds with a thoughtful pause.

    Ich gehe zur Volkshochschule.

    I go to adult education classes.

    When to use it: Say this when you name the adult evening school.

    After zu, the school word takes zur in the dative.

    Say it: The ch in hoch is the ach sound.
