Lesson 31 of 240

New here? This is lesson 31 of a free 240-lesson German course.

Days of the week in German

Priya is back at Bäckerei Krause, and Anton is sure he is on time. He names the day. Renate does not agree.

Today, tomorrow, and yesterday each take a short line. You also get on Friday and at the weekend.

By the end, you'll ask what day it is today, and you'll name Monday, Tuesday, or Sunday.

Anton is proud of being punctual. This time he has the right minute, and the wrong day.

By the end of this lesson

Say today, tomorrow, yesterday, and the days of the week.

  • Welcher Tag ist heute? What day is it today?
  • Heute ist Montag.Today is Monday.
  • Morgen ist Dienstag.Tomorrow is Tuesday.
  • Gestern war Sonntag.Yesterday was Sunday.
  • Am Freitag.On Friday.
  • Am Wochenende.At the weekend.

Scene — the wrong day

It is a weekday morning on Fliederstraße. Priya steps in, and Anton is already at the corner table.

Renate is at the counter with flour on her arms. His Milchkaffee is still full. He looks at the clock, sure he is on time.

Priya steps into the weekday-morning bakery as Renate works at the counter and Anton waits at the corner table with a full coffee.

Learn — today and the week

Six short lines cover today, tomorrow, yesterday, and two ways to name a day.

You'll ask what day it is, then say today, tomorrow, or yesterday.

  1. Priya follows the example days in her class notes just inside the bakery.

    Welcher Tag ist heute?

    What day is it today?

When to use it: Ask this when you need the name of today's day.

Learn it as one piece for asking the day.

Say it: The final -er in Welcher is a weak sound.

  2. Priya looks from her notes toward Anton and asks what day it is.

    Heute ist Montag.

    Today is Monday.

When to use it: Say this to name the day it is today.

Learn it as one piece with the day at the end.

Say it: Montag puts the stress on the first syllable.

  3. Anton answers Priya while glancing toward the clock with confidence.

    Morgen ist Dienstag.

    Tomorrow is Tuesday.

When to use it: Say this to name the day it will be tomorrow.

Learn it as one piece for tomorrow's day.

  4. Priya reacts as Renate gently corrects the day from behind the counter.

    Gestern war Sonntag.

    Yesterday was Sunday.

When to use it: Say this to name the day it was yesterday.

Learn it as one piece for yesterday's day.

  5. Priya heads for the door after telling Anton when she is free, while Renate offers a cheerful farewell.

    Am Freitag.

    On Friday.

When to use it: Say this when something happens on Friday.

Learn it as one piece for on Friday.

  6. Anton remains at the corner table with his coffee still full after Priya has left.

    Am Wochenende.

    At the weekend.

When to use it: Say this when something happens at the weekend.

Learn it as one piece for the weekend.

Say it: The ch in Wochenende is the ach sound, not the ich sound.

Story — Tuesday or Wednesday

Watch Anton name the day at the corner table. Renate already knows he has the wrong one.
