Lesson 146 of 240

New here? This is lesson 146 of a free 240-lesson German course.

Weather forecast in German

The radio at Bäckerei Krause is on the weather. Priya wants tomorrow's forecast, not what it is doing now.

Renate already has a Schirm on the counter. Anton sits in a linen shirt, dressed as if July never left.

By the end, you'll ask if it will rain tomorrow, read a chance of rain, and pass on an umbrella reminder.

Keep today's weather for another lesson. This page is only the forecast.

By the end of this lesson

Ask about tomorrow's weather, read a rain forecast, and remind someone to take an umbrella.

  • Wird es morgen regnen? Will it rain tomorrow?
  • Wie wird das Wetter morgen? What's the weather going to be like tomorrow?
  • Es soll kälter werden. It's supposed to get colder.
  • Die Regenwahrscheinlichkeit ist hoch. There's a high chance of rain.
  • Nimm einen Schirm mit.Take an umbrella.
  • Morgen werden es zwölf Grad.Tomorrow it will be twelve degrees.

Scene — the bakery radio

Morning at the bakery. The radio talks through the forecast while Renate wipes the counter.

A folded Schirm sits next to the till. Anton is in his linen shirt, as if it were still July. His Milchkaffee sits full beside him.

Renate wipes the counter as Priya waits nearby and Anton sits beside his untouched Milchkaffee while the radio carries the forecast.

Learn — rain tomorrow

Six lines cover tomorrow's rain, the forecast, a chance of rain, twelve degrees, and an umbrella reminder.

You'll ask first, then you'll hear the answer.

  1. Anton turns toward the wet bakery window, his full Milchkaffee still untouched beside him.

    Wird es morgen regnen?

    Will it rain tomorrow?

When to use it: Ask this when you want to know if rain is coming tomorrow.

Wird starts the yes/no question; regnen comes at the end.

  2. Priya leans toward Renate across the counter to ask what tomorrow’s weather will be like.

    Wie wird das Wetter morgen?

What's the weather going to be like tomorrow?

When to use it: Ask this for tomorrow's forecast, not for the weather today.

Ask with wird in second place, then the rest of the question.

  3. Renate turns up the small radio as it lists the towns in the forecast.

    Es soll kälter werden.

    It's supposed to get colder.

When to use it: Use this when the forecast says the air will turn colder.

Soll here reports what the radio says, not an order.

Say it: The ä in kälter sounds like eh, not ah.

  4. Renate looks toward the rain on the window while giving Priya the rain forecast.

    Die Regenwahrscheinlichkeit ist hoch.

There's a high chance of rain.

When to use it: Say this when the forecast gives a strong chance of rain.

Learn this long rain-chance word as one piece.

Say it: Stress the first part, Regen, in this long word.

  5. Renate slides the folded umbrella toward Priya after Priya discovers her backpack has none.

    Nimm einen Schirm mit.

    Take an umbrella.

When to use it: Tell a friend to take an umbrella with them.

The prefix mit stands at the end of the clause.

Say it: Schirm starts with the sh sound, not s.

  6. Anton remains beside his untouched Milchkaffee as the radio continues the forecast.

    Morgen werden es zwölf Grad.

Tomorrow it will be twelve degrees.

When to use it: Give tomorrow's temperature when you hear it on the radio.

Werden sits in second place after the time word Morgen.

Say it: The ö in zwölf is a rounded eh sound.
