Welcome to Lesson 133 — Weekend Talk. Quick and friendly: listen, repeat, and try these short weekend phrases in real conversation. Have fun — a little Yak Yack never hurt a weekend!

Level A2: In this short lesson you'll practice eight useful weekend phrases for talking about plans and past activities, like where you ate, what you watched at home, and whether you managed to do something. This lesson is CEFR-aligned and focuses on asking about routines and describing how you spent your weekend.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Use simple past/perfect frames to say where and how you spent the weekend.
  • Ask and answer 'what do you usually do' and 'did you get to…' questions.
  • Speak aloud short German phrases for common weekend activities (A2).

When to use: Say where you had dinner when you want to name a person or place (use 'bei' + Dativ or a locale).

Tip: Beginner error: forgetting the dative after 'bei' or using 'zu' instead of 'bei'.

When to use: Describe something you watched at home; put the thing watched in the accusative (e.g., einen Film, eine Serie).

Tip: Avoid saying 'ich habe zu Hause geguckt' without an object — include what you watched.

Ich hab zu Hause eine Serie geguckt.

Meaning: The weather was nice, so we ___.

When to use: Link good weather to an activity (e.g., gegrillt, einen Spaziergang gemacht). For many movement verbs use 'sind' + participle.

Tip: Be careful: with verbs of movement learners sometimes need 'sind' instead of 'haben' (e.g., 'sind spazieren gegangen').

When to use: Ask about someone's normal weekend routine using 'normalerweise' and 'am Wochenende'.

When to use: Give a short overall opinion about the weekend using an adjective after 'war' (e.g., schön, langweilig, stressig).

Meaning: I spent most of the weekend ___.

When to use: Say how most of your weekend was spent: use a verb phrase or place after 'die meiste Zeit' (e.g., zu Hause, gelesen, geschlafen).

Ich habe am Wochenende die meiste Zeit zu Hause gelesen.
I spent most of the weekend reading at home.
Ich habe am Wochenende die meiste Zeit geschlafen.
I slept most of the weekend.

Meaning: I caught up on ___.

When to use: Say you used the weekend to do overdue things; the thing caught up on is typically a noun in the accusative (e.g., Schlaf, Arbeit, Hausaufgaben).

Tip: Remember to put the noun in the accusative after 'habe(n) ... nachgeholt'.

When to use: Ask whether someone managed to do something; put an infinitive or activity after the blank (e.g., ausschlafen, ins Kino gehen).
