Lesson 239 of 240

New here? This is lesson 239 of a free 240-lesson German course.

Everyone around the counter in German

Priya has everyone at the bakery counter: Renate, Anton, Jule and Deniz. She thanks them one by one for the year, and she says she will keep coming.

The stamp card is still one stamp short. The old key stays in the box. She almost asks, then lets it wait.

By the end, you'll thank a group, say what stays the same, and park a question for later.

By the end of this lesson

Thank people one by one and say what you will keep doing.

  • Danke, dass ihr mich dieses Jahr ertragen habt. Thanks for putting up with me this year.
  • Ich komme weiterhin jeden Morgen vorbei.I'll still come by every morning.
  • Meine Bestellung bleibt übrigens genau dieselbe. My order stays exactly the same, by the way.
  • Ihr seid gleich geblieben, ich nicht ganz. You've stayed the same; I haven't, not quite.
  • Ich werde diese Morgen vermissen.I'll miss these mornings.
  • Da ist noch etwas, das ich nie gefragt habe. There's still something I never asked.

Scene — the bakery counter

Morning at Bäckerei Krause. Renate is at the counter. Jule leans on it with Keks under the bench. Deniz has set a crate by the door.

Anton sits on both chairs, Milchkaffee untouched. Priya stands with them. The Fundkiste is behind the counter, the old key still on a blank tag.

Renate welcomes Priya as Deniz stands by the crate near the bakery door.

Learn — thanks for the year

Six lines cover thanks to a group, what you will keep doing, and a question you still have not asked.

You thank with ihr, because these people are regulars.

  1. Priya thanks Jule beside the counter.

Danke, dass ihr mich dieses Jahr ertragen habt.

Thanks for putting up with me this year.

When to use it: Say this to thank friends or regulars as a group for the year.

After dass, the verb comes last, so ertragen habt sits at the end.

  2. Anton sits across both chairs while Priya stands beside the table.

Ich komme weiterhin jeden Morgen vorbei.

I'll still come by every morning.

When to use it: Say this when you will keep dropping by in the morning.

The prefix vorbei stands at the end of this main clause.

  3. Anton’s untouched milky coffee and plain roll remain on the table.

Meine Bestellung bleibt übrigens genau dieselbe.

My order stays exactly the same, by the way.

When to use it: Add this when your usual order has not changed at all.

Dieselbe stays feminine because it points back to Bestellung.

Say it: The ü in übrigens is a tight ee with rounded lips.

  4. Priya looks warmly toward Renate and Jule at the counter.

Ihr seid gleich geblieben, ich nicht ganz.

You've stayed the same; I haven't, not quite.

When to use it: Say this when they are unchanged and you have shifted a bit.

Ihr is the plural you for this group of regulars.

  5. Priya pauses by the bakery window and looks out at the bright morning street.

    Ich werde diese Morgen vermissen.

    I'll miss these mornings.

When to use it: Say this when these regular mornings already feel like they might end.

Diese Morgen treats those mornings as a known set.

Say it: Morgen puts the stress on the first syllable.

  6. Priya glances toward the lost-and-found box and the old key behind the counter.

Da ist noch etwas, das ich nie gefragt habe.

There's still something I never asked.

When to use it: Use this when something still sits unasked, and you are about to name it.

Nie sits in front of gefragt, and habe still finishes the clause.
