Making an appointment in German

Priya needs to see Dr. Albrecht, so she phones the Praxis from the courtyard. The receptionist uses Sie, and so does Priya.

She asks for an appointment, checks which times are free, and picks a slot.

Thursday is open. Later Renate warns her: that is when the Pfannkuchen go.

By the end you'll book a time, ask what is still free, and ask them to confirm the date.

Priya stands in the Hinterhaus courtyard with her phone. Upstairs from the Apotheke, Dr. Albrecht's Praxis is taking calls.

Renate is at the bakery door across the cobbles, flour on her arms, listening in because the street is small.

Priya waits in the Hinterhaus courtyard with her phone while Renate listens from the bakery doorway.

Six lines take you through a phone booking: ask for a slot, check what is free, pick a time, and confirm it.

You also say which weekday still works for you.

  1. Priya begins the call and asks to make an appointment.

    Ich möchte gern einen Termin machen.

    I'd like to make an appointment.

    When to use it: Use this on the phone when you want to book a time.

    Einen is the accusative form of ein, used here with Termin.

    Say it: möchte has an ö; round your lips for that vowel.

  2. Priya listens, then asks which appointment times are still free.

    Welche Zeiten sind noch frei?

    Which times are still free?

    When to use it: Ask this after you have asked to make an appointment.

    Welche Zeiten comes first, then the verb sind in second place.

  3. Priya explains that Tuesday works for her while considering the available dates.

    Haben Sie am ___ noch einen Termin frei?

    Do you have an opening on ___?

    When to use it: Ask this when you want a slot on a certain day.

    Am plus a weekday names the day you are asking about.

  4. Priya accepts the Thursday appointment time offered by the Praxis.

    Dann nehme ich ___, bitte.

    I'll take ___, please.

    When to use it: Say this when you pick one of the free times.

    After Dann, the verb nehme stays in second place.

  5. Priya asks the receptionist to confirm the appointment date and time.

    Können Sie mir Datum und Uhrzeit bestätigen?

    Can you confirm the date and time?

    When to use it: Ask this once you have chosen a day and time.

    Sie is for the receptionist on this call, not a friend.

    Say it: The ä in bestätigen is a long open e.

  6. After the call, Priya turns toward Renate at the bakery doorway and responds to her friendly remark.

    Ich bin am Dienstag frei.

    I'm free on Tuesday.

    When to use it: Say this when Tuesday is a day that works for you.

    Am Dienstag names the day; the verb bin comes second.

    Say it: Dienstag puts the stress on the first syllable.
