1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

Ich interessiere mich mehr für ___ als für ___.

I'm more interested in ___ than ___.

Meaning: I'm more interested in ___ than ___.

When to use: Use this to compare two topics or hobbies and say which you prefer. Put the two objects in the accusative after "für": "für den Film", "für die Musik".

Tip: Beginners sometimes use dative after 'für' by mistake; remember 'für' takes the accusative.

Ich interessiere mich mehr für klassische Musik als für Pop.
I'm more interested in classical music than pop.
Ich interessiere mich mehr für Reisen als für Shopping.
I'm more interested in travel than shopping.

Ich kenne mich nicht so gut aus, aber ___ macht mir Spaß.

I'm not an expert, but I enjoy ___.

Meaning: I'm not an expert, but I enjoy ___.

When to use: Say this when you like an activity but don't claim expertise. Works well with activities or topics as nouns: "Fotografie", "Geschichte".

Ich kenne mich nicht so gut aus, aber Fotografie macht mir Spaß.
I'm not an expert, but I enjoy photography.
Ich kenne mich nicht so gut aus, aber Programmieren macht mir Spaß.
I'm not an expert, but I enjoy programming.

Über ___ könnte ich stundenlang reden.

Meaning: I could talk about ___ for hours.

When to use: Use this to stress strong enthusiasm. Put the topic after "über" (accusative): "Über Filme", "Über Geschichte".

Über Filme könnte ich stundenlang reden.
I could talk about films for hours.
Über mein Studium könnte ich stundenlang reden.
I could talk about my studies for hours.

Was magst du an ___ am meisten?

What do you like most about ___?

Meaning: What do you like most about ___?

When to use: Ask this to get details about what someone finds appealing. After "an" use the dative: "an der Stadt", "an dem Film".

Tip: Remember: 'an' here takes the dative (z. B. 'an der Stadt'), not the accusative.

Was magst du an dieser Stadt am meisten?
What do you like most about this city?
Was magst du an dem Film am meisten?
What do you like most about the movie?

Gibt es ein Thema, das dich nie langweilt?

Gibt es ein Thema, das dich nie langweilt? Bei mir ist es Musik.
Is there a topic you never get bored of? For me it's music.

In letzter Zeit verfolge ich ___.

Lately, I've been following ___.

Meaning: Lately, I’ve been following ___.

When to use: Use this to describe a current interest you follow regularly: podcasts, news, a blog. 'verfolgen' takes the accusative.

Tip: Make sure the thing you follow is in the accusative (e.g. 'einen Podcast', 'die Nachrichten').

In letzter Zeit verfolge ich einen Podcast über Politik.
Lately, I've been following a podcast about politics.
In letzter Zeit verfolge ich die Diskussionen zur Klimapolitik.

Kannst du mir etwas zu guten Reisezielen empfehlen?
Can you recommend anything about good travel destinations?
Kannst du mir etwas zu diesem Autor empfehlen?
Can you recommend something about this author?

Ich höre gern verschiedene Meinungen zu ___.

I like hearing different opinions about ___.

Meaning: I like hearing different opinions about ___.

When to use: Use this to show you enjoy a range of perspectives on a topic; 'zu' + dative is typical: 'zu diesem Thema'.
