Moving on in German

Deniz is still talking about the key in Bäckerei Krause. Renate has heard it all before, and she is done with the topic for today.

She puts a Pfannkuchen on a plate and looks at Priya, ready to talk about something else.

By the end, you'll close a subject, park it for later, and move the chat on.

These lines work with friends at the bakery, not with a stranger at the counter.

Scene — enough about the key

Sunday morning at Bäckerei Krause. Deniz leans on the counter and starts on the key again.

Renate wipes flour from her hands. Priya sits with Anton, whose Milchkaffee is still full.

A Pfannkuchen waits on a plate. Renate is about to change the subject.

Deniz leans on the bakery counter toward the lost-property box while Renate stands behind it and Anton sits nearby with a full Milchkaffee.

Learn — close it and move on

Six lines help you close a topic, leave it for later, and start the next one.

One of them has a blank for whatever you have talked about enough.

  1. Renate gently signals that the key discussion has run its course while Deniz remains leaning on the counter.

    Ich glaube, das haben wir genug besprochen.

    I think we've covered that.

    When to use it: Say this when a chat has gone on long enough.

    The verb haben stays second after das.

  2. Priya turns from the cafe table and makes a patient gesture suggesting that the discussion can wait.

    Darauf können wir später zurückkommen.

    We can come back to that later.

    When to use it: Use this to park a topic and return later.

    The verb können stays second, after Darauf.

    Say it: For ü, keep your tongue in the position for 'ee' and round your lips.

  3. Renate redirects attention toward a jam doughnut by sliding its plate forward across the counter.

    So, weiter geht's.

    Right, moving on.

    When to use it: Say this when you start the next point.

    The verb comes right after weiter in this line.

  4. Deniz gestures toward the old key and its faded tag despite Renate having redirected attention to the doughnut.

    Lassen wir es erst mal dabei.

    Let's leave it there for now.

    When to use it: Use this to stop a topic without closing it forever.

    Erst mal means you only pause the topic for now.

  5. Priya leans forward and gently lowers an open hand to discourage further details about the key.

    Na ja, genug von ___.

    Anyway, that's enough about ___.

    When to use it: Use this to name a topic you are done with.

    After von, the topic comes in the dative form.

  6. Anton looks toward the waiting jam doughnut rather than the key discussion, with the Milchkaffee still full.

    Gehen wir nicht zu sehr ins Detail.

    Let's not get into all the details.

    When to use it: Say this when someone starts giving too much detail.

    Use wir with friends for this suggestion.

Story — a Pfannkuchen instead

Watch Renate shut down the key talk and put a Pfannkuchen on the counter.
