Free French lessons with guided practice, audio, and speaking support.

Welcome — let’s talk homes! This short lesson helps you describe where you live, ask about rent, and say if you need more space. Keep it relaxed: listen, repeat, and speak aloud.

Level A2: In Lesson 51 we focus on practical phrases to describe your home life — saying you have your own room, complaining about space, asking about rent, and describing your building or neighborhood. You'll hear the chunks in a short conversation, practice with quick quizzes, and say each phrase out loud. This lesson is CEFR-aligned and perfect if you're arranging housing or chatting with neighbors.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Level A2: Say where and how you live (J'habite dans ___, J'ai ma propre chambre).
  • Ask and answer about rent and length of residence (Le loyer est de combien ?, Ça fait combien de temps que tu habites là ?).
  • Describe your building or neighborhood and say if you need more space.
  • Practice asking for and offering basic housing information — useful for moving or apartment hunting.
A neighborhood street scene — useful for talking about 'mon quartier' and local features in French.

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

J'ai ma propre chambre.

I have my own room.

When to use: Use when you want to say you do not share your bedroom with someone else.

Since I moved, I have my own room.
J'ai ma propre chambre et je la décore à ma façon.
I have my own room and I decorate it my way.

Je n'ai pas beaucoup de place.

Meaning: I don't have much space.

When to use: Say this when your home or room feels too small for your things or furniture.

When to use: Use this structure with an amount: e.g. 'Le loyer est de 700 euros par mois.'

Tip: Don't forget 'de' after 'est' — 'Le loyer est de 700 €' is correct; omitting 'de' is wrong.

The rent is 750 euros a month for this apartment.
Dans ce quartier, le loyer est de 1 200 € par mois.

Ça fait combien de temps que tu habites là ?
