Lesson 143 of 240

New here? This is lesson 143 of a free 240-lesson French course.

Weather forecast in French

Sam and Inès plan a walk along Canal Saint-Martin tomorrow. Before they go, they check the forecast on her phone at Café des Tilleuls.

Gaspard is already in the long coat with too many pockets.

You'll ask if it will rain tomorrow, read a forecast, and remind a friend about the umbrella.

This is tomorrow's weather, not the sky you see right now.

By the end of this lesson

Read the forecast and ask if it will rain tomorrow.

  • Il va pleuvoir demain ?Is it going to rain tomorrow?
  • Il fera quinze degrés.It'll be fifteen degrees.
  • Les prévisions parlent de pluie. The forecast says rain.
  • Le risque de pluie est élevé.The chance of rain is high.
  • Demain, ça va refroidir. It'll turn colder tomorrow.
  • N'oublie pas le parapluie.Don't forget the umbrella.

Scene — before the canal

Sam and Inès sit at Café des Tilleuls with her phone on the table. They want a walk by the canal tomorrow, so they open the forecast.

Gaspard is already at the next table on two chairs, in the long coat with too many pockets. His café crème is still full.

The window table stays empty, blank brass sign in place.

A wide café interior with Sam and Inès at a zinc table over a phone, Gaspard on a pair of chairs at the next table, and an empty table by the window.

Learn — rain tomorrow

Six lines cover tomorrow's rain, the temperature, a forecast, a high chance of rain, a colder day, and a reminder to take the umbrella.

You'll hear how people talk about what the sky will do, not only what it is doing now.

  1. A close-up of Sam at the café table, head tilted in a question, with a phone on the zinc and rain on the window.

    Il va pleuvoir demain ?

Is it going to rain tomorrow?

When to use it: Ask a friend about rain tomorrow, not about rain you see now.

Va plus the next verb looks ahead, like rain tomorrow.

Say it: The ain in demain is a nasal sound.

  2. A high-angle view of Inès looking down at a phone held in both hands, with gray rainy window light behind.

    Il fera quinze degrés.

    It'll be fifteen degrees.

When to use it: Give tomorrow's temperature when you read a forecast.

Fera is for later; fait would be the temperature now.

Say it: The s in degrés is silent.

  3. An over-the-shoulder view of Sam hunched toward a phone on the table and pointing at the blank screen, with Inès seated across.

    Les prévisions parlent de pluie.

    The forecast says rain.

When to use it: Use this when an app or the radio mentions rain.

Prévisions means the forecast as a whole, not one wet street.

Say it: The s in Les is silent before prévisions.

  4. A side medium two-shot of Inès facing Sam with palms open in a cautioning gesture, the phone still on the table.

Le risque de pluie est élevé.

The chance of rain is high.

When to use it: Say this when rain looks likely for tomorrow.

Élevé here means the chance is high, not a tall thing.

  5. A profile of Gaspard on a pair of chairs, turning from a full cup toward the next table.

    Demain, ça va refroidir.

    It'll turn colder tomorrow.

When to use it: Use this when tomorrow will be colder than today.

This looks ahead to colder air, not a cold you feel now.

  6. A close-up of a folded umbrella across Inès's lap, with Inès looking toward the other side of the table.

    N'oublie pas le parapluie.

    Don't forget the umbrella.

When to use it: Remind a friend to take an umbrella with them.

N'oublie pas is ne + oublie + pas; ne elides before oublie.

Say it: The e in ne drops, so you hear N'oublie.
