Lesson 150 of 240

New here? This is lesson 150 of a free 240-lesson French course.

Understood, found, finished in French

Sam is at the office, two metro stops from rue des Tilleuls. Claire wants the missing file for the museum audio guide, and her laptop is still open.

He finds it, says he has understood, and tells her the work is done.

You will mark a result in short lines: you got it, you found it, you finished, and everything is ready.

Claire will close the laptop when that's it.

By the end of this lesson

Say you understood, found, or finished something.

  • J'ai compris.I've got it.
  • Je l'ai trouvé.I found it.
  • J'ai fini.I'm finished.
  • C'est bon.That's fine.
  • Ça y est.That's it.
  • J'ai tout préparé.I've got everything ready.

Scene — the laptop is still open

Late afternoon in the small office. Claire sits at a desk with a laptop and a stack of museum-guide kits. The courtyard window is pale.

Sam walks in with a folder. The missing file is in it. Claire looks up, ready to shut the computer if the work is actually done.

Wide view of a small office in late afternoon, Claire at a desk with a laptop and a stack of kits while Sam walks in with a folder.

Learn — understood, found, finished

These six short lines mark a result. You say you understood, you found it, you finished, or everything is ready.

Two more close a task: that's fine, and that's it.

  1. Sam steps through the office doorway with a folder held close while Claire stays seated at the desk.

    J'ai compris.

    I've got it.

When to use it: Say this when an explanation finally makes sense to you.

J'ai compris says the explanation has clicked; it is a completed result.

Say it: The s at the end of compris is silent.

  2. Close-up of Sam opening a folder toward the camera as if the missing file has been found.

    Je l'ai trouvé.

    I found it.

When to use it: Say this when you have found the thing people were looking for.

Trouvé matches the thing you found, not whether you are a man or a woman.

Say it: The l elides onto ai, so l'ai is one beat.

  3. Over Claire's shoulder, Sam stands at the desk and sets the folder down with a finished stance.

    J'ai fini.

    I'm finished.

When to use it: Say this when your part of the work is done.

Fini here means your task is done, not that you yourself are over.

  4. Close-up of Claire looking up from the laptop, fingers lifting off the keys as if the work is acceptable.

    C'est bon.

    That's fine.

When to use it: Say this when the result is fine and you can stop.

Here bon means the work is fine, not that food tastes good.

Say it: The vowel in bon is nasal; the n is not said on its own.

  5. High angle of Claire lowering the laptop lid over the desk, the gesture of a task being complete.

    Ça y est.

    That's it.

When to use it: Say this at the moment a task is done.

This three-word piece marks the moment something is done.

Say it: Y is a vowel here, not a consonant y.

  6. Profile of Claire standing beside the desk with one hand on the stack of kits as if everything is ready.

    J'ai tout préparé.

    I've got everything ready.

When to use it: Say this when everything is ready for the next step.

Tout means everything, so this says the whole set is ready.

Say it: The final t in tout is silent before préparé.
