Bienvenue — ready for a quick, useful French work lesson? This short lesson focuses on everyday phrases you can use to ask about jobs, say where and when you work, and request help. A little Yak Yacker: talk about work, not just yak-yak!

Level A2: In this lesson (54) you'll practice common workplace phrases: asking what someone does for work, saying your job and employer, talking about schedules (start/finish times, days off, full/part-time), and asking for help or the meeting time. These phrases are CEFR-aligned for A2 and perfect for short conversations at work.

When to use: Use this casual, spoken question to ask someone about their job. For more formality say: Vous faites quoi comme travail ?

Meaning: I work as a ___.

When to use: Use this to say your job or role. You can also say Je suis + job title for many professions.

Tip: Remember job titles can change with gender (ex: professeur / professeure).

I work as a developer at a small startup.

I work at ___.

Meaning: I work at ___.

When to use: Use chez to name a company or employer (Chez Orange, chez un client). For some places, à + article is better (à l'hôpital).

Tip: Don’t use chez for public institutions: say à l'hôpital or à l'école instead.

When to use: Use this to name your field or department (e.g., dans la vente, dans l'informatique). Include the article where needed.

I'm looking for a job.

Meaning: I'm looking for a job.

When to use: Use this phrase when you’re actively seeking work. More formal: Je cherche un emploi.

Right now, I'm looking for a job.
Après mes études, je cherche du travail à Paris.
After my studies, I'm looking for work in Paris.

Je commence le travail à ___.

I start work at ___.

Meaning: I start work at ___.

When to use: Use with a time: Je commence le travail à huit heures, or à 9 h 30.

Je commence le travail à 9 h.
I start work at 9:00.
Le lundi je commence le travail à 8 h 30.
On Mondays I start work at 8:30.

I finish work at ___.

Meaning: I finish work at ___.

When to use: Use to state when your workday ends: Je finis le travail à 17 h, or Je termine le travail à 17 h.

Je finis le travail à 18 h aujourd'hui.
I finish work at 6pm today.
Normalement, je finis le travail à 17 h 30.
Normally I finish work at 5:30pm.

I have a day off on ___.

Meaning: I have a day off on ___.

When to use: Use to say your regular day off (le lundi) or a specific day (lundi).

Je suis de repos le mardi.
I have a day off on Tuesdays.
Je suis de repos samedi prochain.
I have a day off next Saturday.

When to use: Use this to request help with work tasks. More formal: Vous pouvez m'aider avec cette tâche ?

Meaning: I'm on break.

When to use: Say this during a short pause at work or school to explain you're taking a break.

Je suis en pause, je reviens dans dix minutes.
I'm on break, I'll be back in ten minutes.
Tu veux un café ? Je suis en pause maintenant.
Want a coffee? I'm on break now.

Je travaille à temps plein.

I work full-time.

Meaning: I work full-time.

When to use: Use to describe a full-time job schedule: Je travaille à temps plein.

Je travaille à temps plein dans une banque.
I work full-time at a bank.
Après mon stage, j'aimerais travailler à temps plein.
After my internship, I'd like to work full-time.

Je travaille à temps partiel.

I work part-time.

Meaning: I work part-time.

When to use: Use to say you work fewer hours: Je travaille à temps partiel. « À mi-temps » is specifically half-time.

Je travaille à temps partiel pour avoir plus de temps libre.
I work part-time to have more free time.
Elle travaille à temps partiel et étudie le soir.
She works part-time and studies in the evening.
