Lesson 157 of 240

New here? This is lesson 157 of a free 240-lesson French course.

The chat misunderstanding in French

Inès sends Sam a voice note about Lyon, and he answers in the wrong chat. Four messages later they are still naming which Wednesday she meant.

This lesson is how you notice a mix-up in a WhatsApp thread and fix it kindly.

You'll say you misunderstood, own a muddy line, check the day, and close it once you both mean the same thing.

Sam writes Désolé; a woman would write Désolée.

Scene — the wrong thread

Thursday evening on rue des Tilleuls. Sam is on the café terrace with his phone. Inès sits down across from him, still on WhatsApp about Lyon.

Gaspard sits at the next table on two chairs, café crème untouched. The window table stays empty.

A wide evening terrace on rue des Tilleuls with Sam on his phone, Inès sitting down across from him, Gaspard on two chairs at the next table, and the window table empty.

Learn — fix the mix-up

Six lines for a chat mix-up: you took it wrong, you were on another topic, you weren't clear, you check the day, you look again, and you close it.

  1. Sam and Inès sit across from each other at the evening terrace table as Sam lowers the phone and opens one hand, realizing the mix-up.

J'ai mal compris ce que tu voulais dire.

    I misunderstood what you meant.

When to use it: Say this when you took a chat the wrong way.

Mal compris means you got the meaning wrong, not that you missed the words.

Say it: The s in compris is silent.

  2. Over Sam's shoulder, Inès turns the phone aside and gestures that a different subject was meant.

    Moi, je parlais d'autre chose.

I was talking about something else.

When to use it: Use this to name what you were actually on about.

Moi up front marks that your topic was not theirs.

Say it: The e of de drops before autre.

  3. Close on Sam at the café table, both hands open in apology toward the opposite chair.

Désolé, je n'ai pas été clair.

    Sorry, I wasn't being clear.

When to use it: Own a muddy message after someone took it the wrong way.

A man says Désolé; a woman says Désolée in the same line.

Say it: Ne becomes n' before ai in je n'ai.

  4. From a low angle, Inès leans across the table and tilts the phone toward Sam to check they mean the same day.

Tu parles bien de mercredi ?

    You're talking about Wednesday, right?

When to use it: Check you both mean the same day in a chat.

Bien here means just to be sure, not well.

  5. From high above, Sam hunches over a phone with a blank glowing screen, thumb paused while double-checking the thread.

    Attends, je revérifie le message.

Hang on, I'll double-check the message.

When to use it: Pause a chat so you can look back at the thread.

Revérifie means you check the message a second time.

Say it: The s at the end of Attends is silent.

  6. In profile, Inès sits back with the phone face-down and hands open on the table as Sam shares a settled pause, Gaspard still at the next table.

    Bon, on s'est compris.

Right, we're on the same page now.

When to use it: Close a mix-up once you both mean the same thing.

On here means we, the two of you in the chat.

Say it: The pronoun se elides to s' before est.
