We'll practice listening, short dialogue use, and quick speaking prompts so you can start using these lines right away. This lesson is CEFR-aligned and focused on practical personal-life abilities.

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Meaning: I need more practice with ___.
When to use: Use this to say you still need practice with a subject or skill area, e.g. «en français», «en maths», «à conduire».
Tip: Don't forget «en» before a subject (e.g. «en français»).
J'ai encore besoin de m'entraîner en français.
I need more practice in French.
J'ai encore besoin de m'entraîner en cuisine.

I haven't learned to ___ yet.
Meaning: I haven't learned to ___ yet.
When to use: Use with an infinitive verb after «à» to say you haven't acquired a skill yet.
Tip: Use «appris à + infinitif» (not «appris de»).
Je n'ai pas encore appris à conduire.
I haven't learned to drive yet.
Je n'ai pas encore appris à parler en public.
I haven't learned to speak in public yet.
Je n'ai jamais essayé de ___.
I've never tried to ___.
Meaning: I've never tried to ___.
When to use: Use with an infinitive after «de» to say you have no experience doing something.
Je n'ai jamais essayé de faire du surf.
I've never tried surfing.
Je n'ai jamais essayé de cuisiner un plat compliqué.
I've never tried cooking a complicated dish.

Meaning: Let me try.
When to use: Use to ask someone to let you attempt a task; informal with «tu». For formal use «Laissez-moi essayer».
Laisse-moi essayer ce puzzle.
Let me try this puzzle.
Laisse-moi essayer de réparer la lampe.
Let me try to fix the lamp.
Je me sens à l'aise pour ___.
I feel comfortable ___.
Meaning: I feel comfortable ___.
When to use: Best with an action/infinitive to express confidence, e.g. «Je me sens à l'aise pour expliquer». With a noun, say «avec + noun».
Je me sens à l'aise pour donner des indications.
I feel comfortable giving directions.
Je me sens à l'aise pour parler avec des collègues.
I feel comfortable talking with colleagues.
Je ne suis pas encore prêt à ___.
I'm not ready to ___ yet.
Meaning: I'm not ready to ___ yet.
When to use: Use to express lack of readiness; remember gender for «prêt/prête» if you add adjectives.
Tip: Watch gender: a woman might say «prête».

I'm not ready to travel alone yet.

When to use: Use to say you can do something with assistance: «Je peux + infinitive + si quelqu'un m'aide».

When to use: Use with an infinitive after «à» to show an ability is developing.
