Scene — a thicker cardigan

Saturday downtown. Tasha pulls Ana into a small clothing shop a few blocks from the L.

A clerk stands by the mirrors. Racks of cardigans sit near the window. Ana still wears her mustard-yellow knit.

Tasha holds a thicker one on a hanger and waits.

Tasha and Ana pause just inside the small clothing shop as the clerk waits near the mirrors.

Learn — try it on

Six lines for a clothing shop. You'll ask to try something on and ask for sizes and colors.

You'll also find the fitting room and say you want to buy one.

  1. Tasha holds a thick cardigan against herself while Ana looks on.

    Can I try this on?

May I put this on to check the size?

When to use it: Say this in a shop when you want to put clothes on.

Learn this as one piece, a casual, polite ask in a shop.

Say it: Can is a light sound here, not like can't.

  2. Tasha presents the cardigan to the clerk while considering another size.

    Do you have other sizes?

Can I see a smaller or larger one?

When to use it: Ask this when you need a smaller or larger one.

Other sizes means a smaller one or a larger one.

  3. Ana notices a blue cardigan among the options at the window rack.

    Does it come in blue?

    is there a blue one?

When to use it: Ask this to check if the same item has another color.

Come in plus a color asks if they have that color.

  4. Tasha points Ana toward the fitting room at the back of the shop.

    Where's the fitting room?

Where can I try clothes on?

When to use it: Ask this in a shop when you need a place to change.

Where's is where is said as one piece.

Say it: Stress the first part of fitting.

  5. Tasha passes the cardigan toward the clerk as Ana waits nearby for another size.

    I'll take this one.

    I want to buy this.

When to use it: Say this when you decide to buy the thing in your hand.

I'll is I will said as one piece, and it shows you decided.

  6. Ana checks the fit of the cardigan at the mirror while Tasha watches.

    It fits just right.

This size is perfect for me.

When to use it: Say this when the size is not too big or too small.

Just right means the size is perfect, not too big.
