Japanese months of the year

Months of the Year in Japanese Made Easy

Tsuki / Gatsu / Getsu
Month; moon

Japanese months are wonderfully logical. Suspiciously logical, even. Once you learn the numbers from one to twelve, the months stop feeling like a giant memorization trap and start behaving themselves.

That is the good news. The slightly annoying news is that Japanese uses different readings for numbers depending on the word, so the pattern is simple but not totally copy-paste. Still, compared with memorizing “September, October, November” in a new language, this system is refreshingly low drama.

If you already know a little Japanese, you may have seen
Tsuki
meaning “moon.” It also shows up in dates and months, because language loves recycling. If you want a broader date foundation too, have a look at how to say dates and days in Japanese. For now, let’s make the months easy.

How Japanese Months Work

The basic pattern is:

Number + 月
Number + gatsu
Month

So:

  • 一月
    Ichigatsu
    January
  • 二月
    Nigatsu
    February
  • 三月
    Sangatsu
    March

And so on up to December. Nice. Clean. No ancient Roman emperor jumping out of a bush to ruin your day.

The Small Pronunciation Traps

Most month names are straightforward, but a few deserve extra attention.

  • 四月
    Shigatsu
    April — not “yongatsu”
  • 七月
    Shichigatsu
July — not “nanagatsu” in standard month naming
  • 九月
    Kugatsu
    September — not “kyūgatsu” here

These are the ones learners most often trip over. Very normal. Very fixable. Just repeat them out loud a few times until your tongue stops arguing.

If the month ends in and your brain panics, start with the number first. Then add gatsu. Japanese is often kinder than it first looks.

Months And Seasons In Real Life

It helps to connect each month with something memorable. Not because you need a cute memory trick, but because your brain likes hooks.
