Traditional Chinese color words with pinyin

Traditional Chinese Color Words with Pinyin and Examples

Color words are sneaky. You learn 紅色 hóngsè, “red,” and suddenly it appears everywhere: traffic lights, red envelopes, tea names, clothing tags, and the face of someone who just realized they ordered the extra-spicy noodles by accident.

This guide teaches everyday Traditional Chinese color words with pinyin, English meanings, and real example sentences. The vocabulary is beginner-friendly, Taiwan-friendly, and practical enough for shopping, describing clothes, ordering drinks, talking about design, and surviving the glorious chaos of a night market.

Small win: most basic color words use sè, meaning “color.” Very civilized. Mandarin occasionally behaves.

How Color Words Work In Mandarin

In Mandarin, color words often work like adjectives. You can put them before a noun with de, like 紅色的包包 hóngsè de bāobāo, “a red bag.” In casual speech, people sometimes drop de when the phrase is short and natural, but beginners can safely use it.
