JLPT N4 Vocabulary List by Theme for Faster Memorization

For the broader learning path, visit our parent guide.

If JLPT N4 vocabulary feels like a giant pile of words wearing the same shoes, theme-based study is the fix. Your brain likes patterns. Shocking, I know.

Instead of memorizing random words, you can group them by daily life topics like time, home, travel, health, school, and work. That makes the words easier to remember, easier to review, and much less likely to escape five minutes later like tiny language gremlins.

For a full test overview, you can also check the Japanese Placement Test JLPT page and compare your progress with the Japanese Vocabulary Test. If you need a broader roadmap, the JLPT N4 Japanese Study Guide is a good companion.

Theme study works because your brain stores meaning in clusters, not neat little spreadsheet rows.

Easy Study Method For Faster Memorization

  • Step 1: Pick one theme, like travel or home.
  • Step 2: Read the words out loud with Rōmaji.
  • Step 3: Cover the English meaning and try to recall it.
  • Step 4: Make one sentence with each word.
  • Step 5: Review the same theme again after one day, then after three days, then after one week.

That repetition schedule is boring in the best possible way. Your brain usually needs a few polite reminders before it stops pretending it never met the word 復習 (fukushū, review).

Mini Practice: Swap The Word

  • 学校 → Make a sentence about school.
  • → Make a sentence about transportation.
  • 病気 → Make a sentence about health.
  • 買う → Make a sentence about shopping.
  • 予定 → Make a sentence about your schedule.

Sample answers: 学校へ 行きます。 (Gakkō e ikimasu.) — I go to school. 駅で 会います。 (Eki de aimasu.) — I meet at the station.

Common Mistakes And Fixes

  • Mixing up similar words: 質問 is not 答え. A question is not an answer. Unfortunately, logic remains undefeated.
  • Forgetting particles: Say 駅で, 家で, 電車に, 学校へ in the right context.
  • Reading only Rōmaji: Use Kanji too. JLPT does not reward “I sort of recognize it in a blur.”
  • Studying in random order: Themes are easier to remember than scattered word lists.
