Food vocabulary in Traditional Chinese for real-life use

Traditional Chinese Food Vocabulary: 140+ Real-Life Words

Food vocabulary is one of the fastest ways to make Mandarin feel useful. Not “useful someday.” Useful right now, like when you are staring at a menu and pretending you absolutely knew what 小菜 was supposed to mean.

For the broader learning path, visit our parent guide.

In Taiwan, food words show up everywhere: night markets, lunch boxes, convenience stores, family meals, cafés, and that very serious moment when someone asks, 你要喝湯嗎? You will learn the everyday words people actually use, not the dusty textbook stuff that nobody says while ordering fried chicken.

We will keep this in Traditional Chinese, with pinyin and simple English meanings. For a reliable reference on writing and usage, you can also check the 教育部重編國語辭典修訂本 or the Cambridge Dictionary for general word-learning structure. Because sometimes boring sources are exactly the helpful ones.

Quick Food Starter Pack

If you only learn a few words first, make them these. They unlock a lot of menus, shopping trips, and casual conversation.
