How to Talk About the Weather in Japanese Naturally

Talking about the weather

Weather talk in Japanese is not just small talk. It is elevator talk, convenience-store talk, “I have no idea what to say to my neighbor” talk, and “please save this awkward silence” talk.

Very useful. Mildly magical.

In Japan, people often open a conversation with the weather because it is safe, shared, and nicely indirect. You are not interrogating anyone’s soul before breakfast. You are just saying, “Wow, hot today,” and everyone gets to nod like civilized humans. For more beginner-friendly Japanese lessons, you can also explore the Learn Japanese hub.

The Core Pattern For Natural Weather Talk

The easiest natural pattern is:

今日は〜ですね。
Kyō wa 〜 desu ne.
It is 〜 today, isn’t it?

The little ending ですね
desu ne
means something like “isn’t it?” or “yeah?” It invites agreement without sounding dramatic. Weather does not need drama. The sky already has clouds for that.

  • 今日は寒いですね。
    Kyō wa samui desu ne.

    Kasa wa hitsuyō desu ka.

Then swap in 暑い
atsui
hot, 寒い
samui
cold,
ame
rain, or 風が強い
