日本語入力
Nihongo nyūryoku
Japanese input
Typing Japanese on Android looks scary for about twelve seconds. Then you realize your phone is not asking you to become a calligraphy monk. It mostly wants you to add a Japanese keyboard, tap a globe icon, and stop panicking politely.
There are two main ways to type Japanese on Android: ローマ字入力 Rōmaji nyūryoku, meaning “romaji input,” where you type sounds like nihongo and get 日本語 Nihongo, “Japanese”; and かな入力 Kana nyūryoku, meaning “kana input,” where you tap Japanese kana directly.
If you are learning Japanese, start with romaji input. It is fast, friendly, and does not glare at you from a textbook.
If you want more Japanese learning after this setup, the Learn Japanese hub is a good next stop. If you are not sure where your level is, try the Japanese placement test, or warm up with the Japanese vocabulary test. There is also a related Japanese guide here: more Japanese typing and study help.
The Quick Setup
Android menus can vary a little depending on your phone brand, Android version, and keyboard app. Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and others like to move the furniture around. Rude, but manageable.
The easiest route for most learners is using Gboard, Google’s keyboard app, because it handles Japanese input neatly and lets you switch languages with one tap.
| Step | What To Tap | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open Settings | Start in your Android phone settings. |
| 2 | Tap System or General Management | The exact name depends on your phone. |
| 3 | Tap Keyboard or On-Screen Keyboard | This opens keyboard settings. |
| 4 | Choose Gboard | This is the keyboard used in many Android phones. |
| 5 | Tap Languages | This is where you add typing languages. |
| 6 | Tap Add Keyboard | Now you can add Japanese. |
| 7 | Choose 日本語 Nihongo | Japanese language keyboard. |
| 8 | Choose 12キー Jūni kī, or QWERTY Kyūwatī | 12-key is kana-style; QWERTY is easier for romaji typing. |
| 9 | Tap Done | Your Japanese keyboard is ready. Tiny victory parade optional. |
After setup, open any app where you can type. Tap the globe icon or long-press the spacebar to switch keyboards. When you see Japanese suggestions appear, congratulations: your phone has joined the language-learning chaos.
Choose Romaji Input First
For most beginners, ローマ字入力 Rōmaji nyūryoku is the smoothest path. You type Japanese sounds with English letters, and Android converts them into kana and kanji.
| Typed Letters | Appears As | Rōmaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| nihongo | 日本語 | Nihongo | Japanese language |
| watashi | 私 | Watashi | I; me |
| gakkou | 学校 | Gakkō | School |
| sensei | 先生 | Sensei | Teacher |
| arigatou | ありがとう | Arigatō | Thank you |
| ohayou | おはよう | Ohayō | Good morning |
Notice that you can type long vowels in a learner-friendly way. For example, typing gakkou can become 学校 Gakkō, “school.” The phone does the polished version. It is basically autocorrect, but useful for once.

How To Get Small っ And Small ゃ ゅ ょ
Japanese has some small kana that change pronunciation. Android handles them well if you type the romaji correctly.
The small っ sokuon marks a doubled consonant. To type it in romaji input, double the next consonant. For example, type gakkou to get 学校 Gakkō, “school.” Type kitte to get 切手 Kitte, “stamp.”
| Type This | Japanese | Rōmaji | Meaning | Example | Example Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| gakkou | 学校 | Gakkō | School | 学校は近いです。 | Gakkō wa chikai desu. | The school is near. |
| kitte | 切手 | Kitte | Stamp | 切手を買います。 | Kitte o kaimasu. | I buy a stamp. |
| zasshi | 雑誌 | Zasshi | Magazine | 雑誌を読みます。 | Zasshi o yomimasu. | I read a magazine. |
| motto | もっと | Motto | More | もっと練習します。 | Motto renshū shimasu. | I will practice more. |
For small ゃ ya, ゅ yu, and ょ yo sounds, type combinations like kyo, sha, chu, and ryo. Your keyboard will make the small kana automatically.
| Type This | Japanese | Rōmaji | Meaning | Example | Example Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| kyou | 今日 | Kyō | Today | 今日は休みです。 | Kyō wa yasumi desu. | Today is a day off. |
| shashin | 写真 | Shashin | Photo | 写真を撮ります。 | Shashin o torimasu. | I take a photo. |
| chuugoku | 中国 | Chūgoku | China | 中国に行きます。 | Chūgoku ni ikimasu. | I will go to China. |
| ryouri | 料理 | Ryōri | Cooking; cuisine | 日本の料理が好きです。 | Nihon no ryōri ga suki desu. | I like Japanese food. |
How To Convert Kana To Kanji
When you type Japanese on Android, you often type the sound first. The keyboard then suggests kanji. This is called 変換 Henkan, “conversion.”
For example, type nihongo. You may first see にほんご Nihongo in hiragana, then suggestions like 日本語 Nihongo, “Japanese language.” Tap the correct one.
Yak wisdom: Japanese typing is not about remembering every kanji shape on command. It is about recognizing the right kanji when your phone offers it. The phone is the waiter; you still choose dinner.
| Type | Choose | Rōmaji | Meaning | Example | Example Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| nihon | 日本 | Nihon | Japan | 日本に住んでいます。 | Nihon ni sunde imasu. | I live in Japan. |
| nihongo | 日本語 | Nihongo | Japanese language | 日本語を話します。 | Nihongo o hanashimasu. | I speak Japanese. |
| benkyou | 勉強 | Benkyō | Study | 毎日勉強します。 | Mainichi benkyō shimasu. | I study every day. |
| renshuu | 練習 | Renshū | Practice | 入力を練習します。 | Nyūryoku o renshū shimasu. | I practice typing. |
| denwa | 電話 | Denwa | Phone call; telephone | 後で電話します。 | Ato de denwa shimasu. | I will call later. |
| namae | 名前 | Namae | Name | 名前を入力してください。 | Namae o nyūryoku shite kudasai. | Please enter your name. |
Romaji Typing Tricks That Save Time
Japanese romaji input has a few small tricks that make typing less clunky. These are worth learning early because they prevent the classic “why won’t my phone give me the thing?” spiral.
| Goal | Type This | Result | Rōmaji | Meaning | Example | Example Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type ん before a vowel | n’ + vowel | んあ | N’a | Separates ん from the next vowel | んをはっきり入力します。 | N o hakkiri nyūryoku shimasu. | I type ん clearly. |
| Type long ō sound | ou | おう | Ō | Long o sound | 学校は「gakkou」と打ちます。 | Gakkō wa “gakkou” to uchimasu. | You type school as “gakkou.” |
| Type long ū sound | uu | うう | Ū | Long u sound | 空港は遠いです。 | Kūkō wa tōi desu. | The airport is far. |
| Type small っ | Double consonant | っ | Sokuon | Small pause sound | ちょっと待ってください。 | Chotto matte kudasai. | Please wait a moment. |
| Type katakana words | Type sound, choose katakana | アプリ | Apuri | App | このアプリは便利です。 | Kono apuri wa benri desu. | This app is useful. |
Should You Use 12-Key Kana Input?
The 12キー Jūni kī keyboard, meaning “12-key keyboard,” is common in Japan. It uses a phone-style layout with kana groups. You tap or flick to choose sounds. It looks mysterious at first, like a vending machine that sells syllables.
If your goal is casual Japanese messaging and you already know hiragana well, 12-key input can become very fast. If you are still learning kana, QWERTY romaji input is usually easier.
| Keyboard Type | Best For | Not So Great For | Example Word | Rōmaji | Meaning | Example Sentence | Example Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ローマ字入力 Rōmaji nyūryoku | Beginners and QWERTY users | People who want native-style phone speed | 日本語 | Nihongo | Japanese | ローマ字入力で日本語を書きます。 | Rōmaji nyūryoku de Nihongo o kakimasu. | I write Japanese with romaji input. |
| かな入力 Kana nyūryoku | Kana practice and faster mobile typing | People who do not know hiragana yet | かな | Kana | Kana characters | かな入力は速いです。 | Kana nyūryoku wa hayai desu. | Kana input is fast. |
| 音声入力 Onsei nyūryoku | Speaking into your phone | Noisy places and shy humans | 音声 | Onsei | Voice; audio | 音声入力を使います。 | Onsei nyūryoku o tsukaimasu. | I use voice input. |
Common Android Problems And Quick Fixes
If Japanese typing does not work right away, do not throw your phone into a symbolic river. Most problems have boring fixes, and boring fixes are the best kind.
| Problem | Likely Cause | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| I cannot find Japanese. | The keyboard language has not been added. | Go to keyboard settings, tap Languages, and add 日本語 Nihongo. |
| The globe icon is missing. | Only one keyboard language is active. | Add another language, then try long-pressing the spacebar. |
| I type romaji but only English appears. | You are still using the English keyboard. | Switch to 日本語 Nihongo using the globe icon or spacebar. |
| The kanji suggestion is wrong. | Japanese has many words with the same sound. | Check the suggestion bar and choose the correct 漢字 Kanji. |
| My keyboard looks like kana blocks. | You selected 12-key kana input. | Change the Japanese keyboard layout to QWERTY if you prefer romaji. |
| Autocorrect keeps “helping.” | Keyboard prediction is active. | Review Gboard text correction settings and adjust suggestions. |
Practice Drill: Type, Convert, Check
Use this drill in any note-taking app or message draft. Type the romaji, choose the Japanese result, then read the full sentence out loud. Yes, out loud. Quiet whispering counts if you are on a bus and wish to remain mysterious.
| Type This | Choose This | Rōmaji | Meaning | Full Sentence | Sentence Rōmaji | Translation |

Mini Messages You Can Actually Send

| また明日。 | Mata ashita. | See you tomorrow. | 今日はありがとう。また明日。 | Kyō wa arigatō. Mata ashita. | Thanks for today. See you tomorrow. |
Common Mistakes And Fixes
Japanese typing mistakes are normal. The keyboard will often guess what you mean, but it is not psychic. It is more like a helpful raccoon with a dictionary.
| Mistake | Why It Happens | Fix | Example | Rōmaji | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typing n before a vowel and getting な, に, ぬ, ね, の | The keyboard combines n with the next vowel. | Use n’ when needed. | 案内を入力します。 | Annai o nyūryoku shimasu. | I type “guidance.” |
| Choosing the wrong kanji | Many Japanese words sound the same. | Read the candidate list carefully. | 橋を渡ります。 | Hashi o watarimasu. | I cross the bridge. |
| Forgetting long vowels | Words like こう and こ sound close to learners. | Type the full romaji, like kou or ou. | 高校に行きます。 | Kōkō ni ikimasu. | I go to high school. |
| Not doubling consonants | Small っ is easy to miss. | Double the next consonant, like tt or kk. | 切符を買います。 | Kippu o kaimasu. | I buy a ticket. |
| Using English keyboard by accident | You forgot to switch keyboards. | Tap the globe icon or long-press space. | 日本語に変えます。 | Nihongo ni kaemasu. | I change it to Japanese. |
Quick Reference Summary
| Task | Fast Answer |
|---|---|
| Add Japanese keyboard | Settings → Keyboard → Languages → Add 日本語 Nihongo |
| Best beginner layout | Use QWERTY with ローマ字入力 Rōmaji nyūryoku |
| Switch keyboards | Tap the globe icon or long-press the spacebar. |
| Convert kana to kanji | Type the sound, then choose the correct 漢字 Kanji suggestion. |
| Type small っ | Double the next consonant, as in gakkou → 学校 Gakkō. |
| Type long vowels | Use combinations like ou and uu, then choose the right suggestion. |
| Practice daily | Type short real phrases like 日本語を勉強しています Nihongo o benkyō shite imasu. |
Yak Takeaway
To type Japanese on Android, add 日本語 Nihongo to your keyboard languages, choose a layout, and start with ローマ字入力 Rōmaji nyūryoku if you are a beginner. Type the sound, choose the right Japanese suggestion, and let Android handle the heavy lifting.
The real skill is not perfect typing on day one. It is recognizing words, choosing the right kanji, and practicing enough that 日本語入力 Nihongo nyūryoku starts feeling normal. A few quick taps, a little daily practice, and suddenly your phone becomes a tiny Japanese study tool instead of just a rectangle for avoiding emails.
